Mike Barnwell joins Mojo Auckland as ECD – Robert Harvey promoted to Mojo NZ group MD
CB EXCLUSIVE: Mike Barnwell is joining Publicis Mojo Auckland as executive creative director filling the job left vacant by Rebecca Carrasco who departed in August after only three months.
He will join Mojo from 1 December, joining Robert Harvey (below left), who, having run ZenithOptimedia’s New Zealand business for a little over a year, takes on the expanded role of group managing director, Mojo and ZenithOptimedia New Zealand.
Manchester-born Barnwell first came to Australia in May this year as ECD of Lowe Sydney, but left after only three months. He began his advertising career 16 years ago in South Africa, and has grown creative departments and reputations at Network BBDO, FCB, and Grey.
Craig Davis, co-chairman and chief creative officer of Mojo Australia and New Zealand said that Barnwell was the standout candidate for the Mojo Auckland ECD role and is more than equal to the challenge he has set – namely, to accelerate development of progressive integrated creative solutions for Mojo’s local, regional and international clients.
Says Davis: “Mike is a formidable talent and a good human being. He will bring his rigor, energy, integrity and craft to our New Zealand team, and give Mojo a leg-up to reclaiming its creative leadership in the region.”
Barnwell said he has nothing but respect for New Zealand’s legendary creative output and prodigious work ethic: “Mojo’s longstanding creative pedigree is well known. I’m thrilled to be a part of a team that truly understands and believes in the value of producing progressive creative work. That, coupled with working in a market that is notorious for punching well above its weight creatively, makes this an incredibly exciting opportunity.”
Barnwell’s work has been recognized with Cannes Lions, Clios, One Show and New York Festival medals of every hue, as well as two D&AD Yellow Pencils. He also has an unusual breadth of client experience, having grown auto, telco, FMCG, and financial services brands to leadership positions in their sectors.

I hope it works out for you mike. Stay strong
Mike will be a fantastic addition for Mojo. Top bloke, smart and passionate ………. he was treated so badly by Lowe (and where are they now??) great to see a good agency taking advantage of his talent in the region.
Good luck Mike.
May they not fuck you like the fuckers at Lowes.
Hope it works out, but prob not the most secure stop in the region.
Nice to see this guy fell on his feet after getting fucked around at Lowe
Would any self respecting creative ever work at Lowe after Mike’s experience?
no.
And to be along Robert Harvey isn’t bad either. Dual Brownlow Medalist, eight-time All Australian, 380+ game veteran, and one of the true greats. Some amazing credentials right there.
Congrats Mike. I’m glad it worked out for you. All the best in NZ.
So what happened to Mike at Lowe?
I greatly enjoy the idea of Mojo as a nurturing, safe environment for people who have been screwed around elsewhere.
Lowe didn’t just fuck people around in Oz. It happened in NZ too.
So Lowe…RIP Leslie Nielsen
“Lowe didn’t just fuck people around in Oz. It happened in NZ too.”
Really? As someone who was at Lowe in NZ for while, care to elaborate on that statement, 7:25?
Go Mike…any agency is lucky to have you…you truly are a good person and deserve to be treated with the same integrity that you treat others…not to mention your creative talent…New Zealand’s gain is Australia’s loss!!!
Lowe is dying in a very public and humiliating manner.
Everyone can see it and it’s sad to watch. Just like the
swede thats dies of a shark attack in The Beach it’s
better if we put Lowe in a tent out of view maybe in Newscastle.
And just enjoy the xmas parties.
Mike has big battle ahead. I wish him the best
His chair looks wonky.
Good luck in the new gig.
laka my boet.
welldone boyke
Sweet as! Keen to have Mike in the office, and excited to have Rob leading the charge. This makes Monday way more exciting.
Congrats Mike – really happy for you.
Fired from Lowe much 9.27?
Bet you’ve got a great gig now.
No I wasn’t fired from Lowe.
It’s simply that your agency is
the laughing stock of the industry.
It’s only ever mentioned in regards to bad
work, losing business, terrible treatment
of staff or being sued.
Sorry but it’s an embarrassment
to advertising.
9.27
Are you drunk at 9.27 in the morning?
9.27
At least he has an agency, I’d bet my left one that you don’t.
