Mavens launches Volume 2 magazine launch and pioneering gender equality advertising event in Melbourne, Thursday 21st Sept, 7:30pm – 10pm
Independent activist platform Mavens has announced its Volume 2 magazine launch and panel event, to champion the gender equality movement in adland. The event will take place in Melbourne on Thursday 21st September 2023, 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm AEST.
Off the back of the successful Volume 1 magazine launch last year, the volunteer-run organisation is all set to make an even bigger impact with the agenda for this year’s exciting publication event.
Says Leah Morris, Mavens founding editor and senior copywriter based in Melbourne: “I believe that when we come together as an industry, we can be even more effective than the sum of our parts. This initiative is designed to unite us all in a shared mission to make gender equality the new norm.”
Together with Mavens design director Vanessa La Delfa, the pair have produced a 160+ page print magazine with a 400-copy distribution. Featuring content by, and interviews with, many of advertising’s most inspirational women, Mavens magazine and its channels provide a platform to not only discuss, but also provide practical and proactive ways to affect real positive change within the communications industry.
The annual ‘September Issue’ will launch with a 200-person event in Melbourne’s inner North on Thursday, September 21st. Themed ‘Visibility For Change’, topics will include the importance of role modelling, self-promotion, agency culture, tackling intersectional challenges, visibility in casting and creative and the value of diverse perspectives in the communications industries and beyond.
Speakers include:
● Lisa Cox – TEDx Speaker, Author, Internationally Awarded Thought Leader & Consultant
● Ruhee Meghani – Founder & Lead Facilitator at Allied Collective
● Shyaire Ganglani – Associate Creative Director, Copywriter & Spoken Word Poet
● Amber Bonney – Founder and CEO at The Edison Agency & Podcast Host
● Lauren Zappa – Manager, Gender Equity and Capacity Building at shEqual (Women’s Health Victoria)
Mavens DEI director Lauren Chibert will moderate the power panel.
Partners include shEqual, an initiative of Women’s Health Victoria (Platinum), R/GA, FatBelly VFX (Gold), The Royals and The Edison Agency (Bronze). The production partner is Melbourne-based photography production agency, Miss Bossy Boots.
It’s a big step forward for Morris, who launched the Mavens from her bedroom during the pandemic after consulting with equality role model Cindy Gallop.
Says Morris: “I had a clear realisation that the career I want – and that many of my women peers want – really mightn’t be possible within the status quo.
“The gender pay gap, motherhood penalty, ageism, sexual harassment… it all has to be replaced with safe, inclusive workplaces where women want to stay and thrive. Mavens is part of a growing community who can make that happen.”

So keen for this. Hopefully lots of men come too!
Love!
My agency is 70% female, and from what I hear, that’s pretty much the norm these days. If you’re in an agency, count for yourself.
As to our clients, almost all are female.
That’s great! What percentage of your senior management staff are female?
love this panel! Go shy
