Malibu partners up with Olympic icons + Bondi legends for ‘Don’t Drink and Dive’ campaign

This Summer Malibu is bringing “Don’t Drink and Dive” Down Under with a goal of educating Aussies on the dangers of drinking alcohol in or around the water. The campaign sees British Olympic diver Tom Daley team up with Olympic swimmer Cate Campbell, Swimming Australia, and Bondi Lifeguards (Harries, Anthony Glick, and Clint Kimmins).

In partnership with Swimming Australia, Malibu is urging people to think and drink differently around water in a new social initiative and safety awareness campaign. One in four drownings in Australia have a blood alcohol content of 0.05%, revealing just how relaxed some Aussies’ attitudes are towards the risks of consuming alcohol around water.

Recent research from the Royal Life Saving Society Australia (RLSSA) found that alcohol and other drugs continue to play a significant role in drowning and aquatic injuries across Australia. Data shows that 1 in 4 drownings in Australia are alcohol related.

The social initiative is in partnership with British Olympic diver Tom Daley – who went viral for knitting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. What started as Tom’s stress-relief hobby quickly became a symbol of mindfulness and mental well-being, inspiring his knitwear brand, Made with Love by Tom Daley.

On partnering with Malibu to bring the responsible drinking campaign to Australia, Tom said: “I’ve always loved being in the water, but maybe more than most, I also understand its power and the need to respect it to stay safe. I’m proud to be working with Malibu, Bondi lifeguards and Swimming Australia to get this message out to the other side of the world. Stay safe and ‘Don’t Drink and Dive!’”

To mark the safety awareness campaign, Malibu is bringing its limited-edition capsule collection of knitted apparel, in collaboration with Daley’s own ‘Made With Love’ knitwear line, to Aussie consumers this summer, after selling out in the UK. Ranging from cheeky swimwear briefs ($101 RRP) to stylish bucket hats ($61 RRP).

Cate Campbell said “As a swimmer, water has always been where I’m in my element, and I know just how quickly things can turn dangerous if we aren’t careful. I’m excited to be part of this campaign with Malibu, Bondi lifeguards, and Swimming Australia and to help remind people not to Drink and Dive. It’s all about promoting safe choices – so everyone can enjoy the water.”

Promoting water safety, Swimming Australia will use the donation to put towards community projects encouraging people to swim.

Jodie Hawkins, EGM Commercial at Swimming Australia said: “Water safety cannot be emphasised enough in Australia, and Swimming Australia is proud to stand by Malibu and Olympian Tom Daley to call out the impact of alcohol consumption while being around water. Many Aussies are unaware of the significant risks associated with being around water while under the influence of alcohol. Don’t Drink & Dive will play an essential role in helping to educate the public of these risks.”

Pernod Ricard Pacific Managing Director, Kevin Mapson, says “All over the world Malibu is a brand recognised for being synonymous with Summer. In Australia we are lucky to have a strong swimming and water culture, and after seeing the impact from the research we knew we had a role to play in educating Aussies this summer on the importance of the ‘Don’t Drink and Dive’ message.”

Malibu is not only the world’s number one white rum-based coconut spirit, it’s a brand that has made a long-term global commitment to raise awareness of “Don’t Drink and Dive”. In 2024, Malibu launched the message in the UK with Tom and this knit line, and just last month Malibu launched a new range of Made with Love sweaters. Malibu and Tom’s limited-edition ‘Don’t Drink and Dive’ merchandise is now available to purchase here. 100% of profit from all sales goes directly to programs that educate people on the importance of safety by the water.
