KFC launches new augmented reality game ‘The Great Bucket Hunt’ with a bucketload of prizes
KFC has launched “The Great Bucket Hunt” a mobile-based adventure game with augmented reality (AR) that allows KFC fans to win food, sports and food experiences as well as $5,000 and $50,000 cash prizes. The game has been developed in conjunction with a variety of agencies including Geronimo, UNBND, Ogilvy Australia, OPR Agency, Mediacom and AKQA.
Available to KFC fans nationwide, players can search for virtual buckets placed all over our glorious country. Playing couldn’t be easier; users simply tap “The Great Bucket Hunt” on the KFC App to go forth in their bucket-hunting quest. To hunt down the goods, users will need to use the Bucket Map to find the virtual buckets, then spin them using AR to see what they’ve won and add them to their stash. And if you’re anything like us, you’ll know there’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition, which is why fellow bucket-hunters can snap up virtual buckets right in front of users’ eyes.
The good news is there are heaps of prizes to be won, but the even better news is that no one walks away empty-handed. Everyone’s a winner in “The Great Bucket Hunt” as there’s a tonne of drool-worthy prizes to be won from a range of categories, including:
- Free KFC food: 15-piece Original Recipe, 3-piece Original Tenders, Zinger Burger, Ultimate Box, Large Popcorn Chicken, Nugget Go Bucket, we could go on…
- KFC merch and great value deals: KFC hoodies, 30 for $10 Nuggets, 21 for $21 Original Recipe Chicken, 10 for $10 Tenders, $2 Sliders and more
- Sports and food experiences: NRL Grand Final tickets, AFL Grand Final tickets, Ashes Tickets, Free KFC for a year, KFC Family Feed every Sunday for a year and your own KFC Catering Pack
- Cash prizes: $25 – $200 eftpos gift cards, $5,000 cash and for one lucky winner, $50,000 in cash!!
So now you know what’s up for grabs, all that remains to be answered is how to hit the jackpot, all users have to do is find three Golden Buckets to score either $5,000 or to be the one lucky player who will walk away with the $50,000. Anything can happen in this game of chance, so users won’t know if they have a Golden Bucket until they find it and spin it.
For fans stacking up their prizes in their stash in the game, they shouldn’t sit on their food prizes for too long as there is only 72 hours to redeem them by ordering via the KFC App and picking up their goods. Users can only redeem one food prize per day, so make it count. Or maybe you’re feeling lucky and are ready to take on the Colonel in a game of Flip the Coin by choosing the food item in your stash to forfeit and choosing heads or tails to play. But you only get one go for every food prize you win, so whether you get the same prize back or something better or worse, there’s no telling until you play.
Says Kristi Woolrych, CMO at KFC Australia: “We’re so excited to launch “The Great Bucket Hunt” for the first time to give Australians the chance to play and win big with a tasty selection of prizes. We know our fans go crazy for our food, and so our prizes are made up of delicious Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC bucket list experiences, as well as a number of cash prizes, with everyone walking away a winner. We hope our fans make the most of “The Great Bucket Hunt” by venturing out and finding the hidden buckets!
“The Great Bucket Hunt” will be available for fans to play for free on Android or iOS via the KFC App from Tuesday 15 June until Monday 12 July across Australia.

Disguised as KFC
Yes
The maccas monopoly app could do this last year
2015?
Pretty tidy interpretation of the Colonel into 3D. Golf clap.
There’s a lot of free food coming out of this I have literally just had 2 free box meals lunches how are they making any money
Aaaaaand the Bucket Hunt Map doesn’t load and the whole thing crashed.
Pretty much as expected.
Potentially great, practically frustrating. Had three goes this morning which had me running in different direction to make a very short time limit, all of which ended after ‘spinning the bucket’ with “oops something went wrong, return to app” which had by then timed out.
Seriously, not worth the bother…..
Exactly, the number of times I have managed to finally score a bucket only to have it take 10 minutes waiting for the game play to load only to spin and get errors… So frustrating! The few times I actually got the prize, I usually had errors trying to checkout, so I couldn’t claim it… Or it was a freeze. No thanks.
The performance of the app during bucket hunt on 3 month old Samsung s21 is terrible…
But looking
Google google maps
App only seems to update your GPS position once every minute or so, doesn’t make much sense when the buckets are timed…
