Industry veteran Andy Blood to lead ‘There Is No Algorithm For Creativity’ panel at SXSW Sydney

Andy Blood, Industry Fellow at Auckland’s Media Design School, authored a proposal and convened a panel that survived SXSW Sydney’s panel-picker process, a public vote and moderator scrutiny, to be chosen for this year’s festival held in Sydney in October.

The subject: There Is No Algorithm For Creativity, will be discussed and debated by a panel of esteemed guests comprising of David Lee, Chief Creative Officer, Squarespace; Dr Michelle Dickinson, PhD, MNZM, Nanotechnologist; Claus Stangl, ARCHIBALD PRIZE ‘Packing Room Prize Winner’, (2022), and James Hurman, founder, Previously Unavailable.

Session detail:

There is no algorithm for creativity. Because not all maths is computable and not all processes are algorithmic. Not while we’re using classical computers at least. So says Nobel laureate, Sir Roger Penrose. If true, then all the processing power in the universe won’t help AI be more creative than us because human creativity might just be one of those areas where an algorithm might never be found. Until quantum computing arrives that is. A fascinating topic, and the panel aims to promote a lively discussion by asking four world class proponents of creativity whose professions couldn’t be more different and whose opinions couldn’t be more diverse, what their views on the future of human vs machine or human plus machine creativity might be. They are David Lee, Chief Creative Officer, Squarespace; Dr Michelle Dickinson, PhD, MNZM, Nanotechnologist; Claus Stangl, ARCHIBALD PRIZE ‘Packing Room Prize Winner’, 2022, who produces large-scale paintings and portraits often take months to make, and James Hurman, entrepreneur, strategist, part-time VC, advertising effectiveness expert, company leader, and author of The Case for Creativity, and Future Demand. He founded and continues to lead Previously Unavailable, a venture company that creates companies and provides investment capital and new product, brand and business design and development to select portfolio companies and client partners. The panel discussion will be moderated by Andy Blood, fearless creator, serial innovator, triple Cannes Grand Prix winner, former World’s Most Highly Awarded Creative Director, turned author and Industry Fellow, Media Design School. Andy will also be available as part of SXSW Sydney’s mentor sessions.
