GUY ROOKE PROMOTED TO CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT CLEMENGER BBDO SYDNEY
After 12 months in the role as Associate CD at Clemenger BBDO Sydney, Guy Rooke has been appointed as the agency’s Creative Director, reporting to ECD Richard Maddocks. Rooke joined Clemenger in January ‘08 after a three year stint at Crispin Porter & Bogusky. Before that he had been a part of Colenso BBDO’s award winning creative department.
“Rookie’s been brilliant. With his CPB experience he’s brought a perspective that’s totally fresh to the agency and our clients. He’s made a huge impact here both in helping shape and direct the work, as well as the culture,” says Maddocks.
Rooke’s work here, in the US and NZ has won awards around the world. Late last year he and his team completed the Samedi project, channelling the voodoo spirit of Baron Samedi to help create ads for Frucor’s new energy drink that’s named after him.
“It’s rare to find people of his calibre in the market – who get both the business side of things as well as have an undying passion for the work. Rich and Guy make a formidable team leading our creative product as we move forward,” says Clemenger BBDO Sydney MD Andy Pontin.
Rooke says last year was great and is looking to big things in ’09. “It’s all about momentum and staying focused on the positives. Last year was a good year for us on many fronts. Now it’s time to keep building on that. To keep pushing to do things differently. I’m delighted to continue working alongside Rich and play a part in leading that change.”

That Samedi stuff proved a real hit. I just looked on the site and there was less than ten comments, and the majority of those seemed to be from the agency.
I can’t wait to see the award entry though, it’s sure to talk up the “unprecedented response”, or will they go for the “response beyond our wildest dreams” angle.
BOOM
And the Sales…they are killing it! I give Samedi 6 months more on the market. Tops.
The man is, was, and always will be an absolute fucking genius. He is the kind of creative an agency – indeed, an entire network – can be built on. Clems Sydney is now firmly on the cusp of greatness. And I do not hesitate to say that we are witnessing the emergence on the next great Australian talent a la Dave Droga. If you want to see where our industry is heading intellectually and creatively over the next five years, I’d be watching Guy’s steady stream of ads. He gets it because he invented it.
Wow, Guy you haven’t aged a bit since that photo was taken 2 years ago.
Well done.
I think the angle will be: ‘An unprecedented response beyond our wildest dreams’.
Wow 10:55. Who crapped in your sandwich?
“He gets it because he invented it”
nice one.
Why don’t you blow him, 2:50pm, you sycophANT!
4:32, here’s a hint: he works in the kitchen at the Coogee Bay Hotel.
Wow. The amount of stupid, bitter comments on this blog never cease to amaze me. This blog would be so much better without them. But that’s not going to happen, is it, Lynchy? I’ve met Guy once in Cannes. He seemed alright. Good on him.
Jesus, how much date licking is 2.55 doing, it reminds me of a card I once had the unfortunate experience of reading, and thank god never witnessing, it was along the lines of self sucker seeks similar.
I hope Guy knows who you are, unless of course its you Richard, then the above request would have achieved its purpose.
As for his popularity at Clems, from what I understand of the law, that comment seriously would not stand up in tub of concrete, let alone a court.
Good luck to him though, it’ll be interesting to see how many infomercials he gets his face into this coming year.
I do sincerely hope Clems have great year, they have some fantastic talent and some ‘genuinely’ nice people.
I agree a bit more soberly with 2:50pm.
There are people who get the next 5 years and people who are still trying to craft their ads to what they think judges will award. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out one mindset is living in the past while the other is pushing ahead not giving a fuck what the puritan nanny’s think.
I’d personally rather make paths nobodies been down instead of sticking to the highway with my thumb out waiting for the gravy train. The ones who do don’t have the guts to fail.
Change? Yes we can.
onya rookit.
The crab.
I’m sure Guy Rooke is a hugely talented creative, but I’m with 10:55 here. Why put that Samedi stuff in the press release? Clearly it flopped badly. Hasn’t Clems got anything better to crow about work-wise?
I’ve never told anyone this…but I like guys…sorry. (Is this a wierd place to come out?)
I remember a leaving card for a suit no one liked.
The front cover said, “Fuck off”.
The inside said, “You cunt”.
Not really related, but someone mentioned reading a card and I thought it worth mentioning. Certainly a lot better than bitching about an advertising employee who takes his job very seriously.
Hey. It’s the homophobe again. Welcome back 8:41. Haven’t seen you since the Vote Earth post.
Congrats Guy. You’re a top bloke.
I find personally the business side to be far more exciting than the creative. Don’t ask me why. Shifting piles of cash around seems to be more fun than dealing with children.
Well done Guy. Concentrate on the business end of creative and you’ll find the bloodsuckers around you are a lot more polite.
Great bloke, great creative.
Proof that being a wanker isn’t a prerequisite to being a creative.
Deserves everything that comes his way.
2.50’s comment is a BIT obvious. Some serious self-interest going on there, but that’s the nature of an anonymous blog. However well done Guy. You’ve worked your ass off for a very long time, you’ve done some good stuff, and you deserve the opportunity.
Before this well-deserved promotion, I think Mr Rooke was an associate CD reporting to an ECD, Mr Maddocks.
How exactly is what he is doing now different?
If it isn’t different, why is this a press release? Why is this non-story a story?
Is it a diversion?
What clients have Clems lost? How many people have they had to let go?
Rooker, This is great news bud. I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving. Grohl would be proud.
Hey Rookie, love that new Masterfoods ad you just did at Clems. It’s gold. Far better than Samedi. It’s got Award written all over it mate.
