Greyhound Racing NSW + Greyhounds as Pets launch new campaign via Bastion Banjo
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has launched its brand new campaign via Bastion Banjo to promote its not-for profit initiative, Greyhounds As Pets (GAP).
The campaign, titled ‘Setting New Standards’ features former Australian Socceroos legend and GAP ambassador Tim Cahill.
Cahill made his first public appearance for GAP on June 30 at the Greyhound Adoption Day at Lyne Park in Sydney’s East. This was one of many such adoption days designed to bring education and awareness to the GAP program.
Says Andrew Varasdi, managing partner, Banjo: “Greyhounds are misunderstood and stigmatised by far too many people. We are extremely excited to have been appointed to this campaign and to be working with GRNSW to change perceptions and educate people about what wonderful pets they really make.”
Says Tony Mestrov, CEO, Greyhound Racing NSW: “Greyhounds As Pets program is a key plank in the Greyhound industry’s commitment to the rehoming of retired Greyhounds. A commitment that extends well beyond a Greyhound’s racing career. The message we want to spread is simple and clear: ‘Adopt a Grey Today’. GAP is doing extraordinary work and we are delighted to have Tim on board to help us achieve our goal.”
Cahill is so passionate about the program that he recently adopted a greyhound by the name of ‘Luna Moana’. ‘LUMO’ now lives on his family farm in Byron Bay.
Says Cahill: “This campaign is an amazing opportunity to educate the public on the great work being done by GAP and what great pets greyhounds make. Seeing these beautiful animals adopted into loving homes is what I want to see most as a result of this fantastic campaign.”
Cahill will front an extensive advertising campaign encompassing digital, print and TV that goes live today, Wednesday 18th September, in the Daily Telegraph and 15 second pre-rolls online.

It always left a bad taste in my mouth that GAP is funded by the racing industry.
I’ve got $50 on LUMO each way at Sandown tomorrow
“Greyhounds don’t need much exercise”…what utter bullshit. How you can make a statement like like beggars belief. ALL dogs no matter their size need lots of daily exercise.
They don’t though. 10-15 minutes sprinting and they’re done for the day.
If you have not had one for a pet you don’t know what you have missed.
Having trained and owned greyhounds I can tell you that they are beautiful, gentle animals. People think they are aggressive because they wear a muzzle in public, a stupid rule that should be dropped because they never show aggression. They love children and just want to be loved back. They only require a walk like any other dog, no more no less.. You won’t regret having one as a pet….
The comment by Dog Gone above is incorrect. Cahill is correct. I have 2 greys for over 4 years and they go for a 10 minute slow walk in the morning, have breakfast and then hit the couch until dinner time. They are asleep on the couch beside me now.
Do any of the comments matter as long as we adopt as many greys as we can. Sadly my girl died of kidney disease l only had her 6 years. The most beautiful dog I have ever had.and it broke my heart.
Great great pets greyhounds are.
I have my old race dog inside he is one of our family It is true they require hardly any exercise and sleep most of the time but can be exuberant when feeding or seeing us after we have been out without him.
Loves us and his home.
If there are better pets they must be awesome to outdo the magnificent long-legged friendly greyhound.
As an owner of an old racer they are such wonderful dogs.
Shouldn’t LUMO have been wearing a green collar…..surprised GAP approved it without one. A greyhound is required by law to wear a muzzle when in public if it doesn’t have a green collar on.
Gap pick and choose the hounds that they know are easy to rehome they wont take on dogs that have injuries or need a bit of work to get them ready to join the world as a pet
That is left for the not for profit or they thrill of saying we are the good guys
The industry doesnt give a damn about the hounds that can die every time they are raced
As far as Tim Cahill i use to think he was a nice guy i now think he is a imbecile who needs to look for a sport that doesnt think twice about killing a healthy dog because they arent winning
