Saw this on tellie last night. Thought it was way too myopic and confusing. Us industry types might understand the commercial-making process, but my guess is that Joe Public would find it bewildering, especially the bits where the crew try to use energy saving mechanisms. It might have been a good idea at the time, but…no, it should have been killed – or made much, much simpler by the CD.
High fuckin’ art.
Correct 5:24. And Brashs beat blood bank by at least 10 years.
No doubt someone did it before Brashs.
Great spot. 5.25 we produce filler content for TV PROGRAMS – if it was recreating the brain cell by cell, synapse by synapse – i would agree with you – BUT lets face it, in this spot we see lights, a camera, makeup – not hard to understand. thats all the public see and need to get their head around.
Finally an ad that makes me think the woolies ads are good. I never thought i would like them but then… this pops up and… just makes everything around it look better. What a jealous of an idea.
Does it feel like the guy is running with verbal diarrhea to get through his lines or is it just the sudafed getting to me?
How is anyone meant to understand what is going on? Its like a rollercoaster ride, not an ad. One shot might seem like a good idea on paper but in reality…
so why have 2 monitors in the ‘green van’ AND on set? and is it THIS commercial thats green? or the one their shooting inside the house?
And what about the post production? did they hoop up solar to Videolab too? or did they online it all on a pedal powered macbook?
And why shoot indoors at all? shoot the whole thing outside if you want to show your really saving energy?.. or not air or make the ad at all? just have a black screen for 30 seconds?..just imagine the collective energy saved around australia NOT showing just one ad for 30 seconds?…or.. oh why am i even wasting the energy
Worst demonstration of energy efficiency ever.
energy Efficient ads seems to be the trend this week:

I feel like I wasted energy watching this ad. Then AGL over charged me for it.
They have just dropped the solar rebate from 60c to 20c.
Timely.
AGL needs to smarten up their customer service without doing their money on this crap.
one of the worst ads in long time. woefully directed, woeful idea.
Bingo 10:15: A black screen for 30 seconds. Not just an exercise in energy saving but a brilliant product demonstration – with massive, relevant cut-through.
Wasn’t that hard, was it GPY&R?
yeah. crap.
When will agencies learn that good ads command not demand attention?
The ad is not worth talking about, but the content…even worse.
AGL are forced by government to have a certain amount of “Green” energy, but of course that energy costs upwards of ten times the amount it costs to produce “brown” energy. What that means is that the people not using Green energy are forced to subsidise the Green energy users. This subisidisation recently reached such an extent in NSW that the state government had to reneg on it’s promises to people who had installed solar panels because of the massive cost to other users.
The biggest fantasy of all, of course, is that alternative energy sources work. They don’t, at least not yet. Solar and wind can’t provide base power loads. Worse, becaue their output is inconsistent – not delivering when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow – we need more gas-fired power stations to compensate. (Gas-fired stations can be brought on line quickly, while coal fired stations take days to get going.)
Because the gas-fired stations are less energy efficient than the coal fired stations, the alterntive energy sources actually add to our carbon output. Brilliant.
Wow that was bad.
12:41 PM: Black Screen – done a million of times, btw – just check out: http://www.blackle.com and many more … boring …
Thinking wasn’t that bad at all – just not too sure if the audience would understand what it’s all about… maybe it’s been overthought, and taken for granted that everyone knows about energy efficiency. I reckon the “general” consumer doesn’t know about “all in one shot” or “the meaning in filming in the house and not outsourcing actors bla bla …” – overall, maybe not creative simple enough?!
I do get it though – and FYI 8:55 PM: Not really sure if the agency has a load of input regarding the content …
Just my opinion …
Worst customer service ever!! I called to resolve an issue with a bill (they charged my account BEFORE they sent me a bill so I had no idea what was happening). The staff at customer service were rude, spoke with a manager — they were WORSE and after being rude to me they HUNG UP on me.
i was in this ad and i could not agree more with the general consensus
young producer with head up ass + young director with no decision making skills+actor with head up ass+ bad idea initially = waste of time and space advertising.
paid damn well though!
wonder if they need me to come back and overdub my silence
