GPY&R Melbourne claims Australia’s most awarded agency status at Spikes Asia 2012
GPY&R Melbourne claims it was the most awarded Australian agency at last night’s Spikes Asia Awards, taking out a total of 11 awards of which included seven Gold – the most Gold ever awarded to an Australian agency.
The second most awards on the night went to DDB Sydney with seven awards as well as the ‘Agency of the Year’ title.
In an agency PR release it states: It is interesting to note that the prestigious ‘Agency of the Year’ Award, won by DDB Sydney, does not take into consideration several categories that GPY&R won including Mobile and Promotion & Activation.
Game Signatures, created as part of the ‘This is Greatness’ campaign for the 2011 Toyota AFL Final Series, was awarded a Gold for Outdoor and a Gold and Silver for Promotion & Activation.
Mobile Medic, the first medically diagnosable advertising created with VML for Defence Force Recruiting, took out two Gold Award’s for Promotion & Activation, a Gold Award for Outdoor and another for Direct, and both a Silver and Bronze Award for Mobile.
‘Life Cycle’, created for Medibank, was awarded Gold in the Film category. The Box, a TVC created for drug and alcohol rehabilitation organisation Odyssey House, completed GPY&R’s medal hall with a Bronze Award for Film.

What Patt’s is saying is true. The only reason why DDB got the gong was because of the antiquated award definition for Agency of The Year. Anyway great news for both agencies!
Dear Spikes,
if your rules say that Mobile and Promotion & Activation are not worthy of points for Agency Of The Year, yet craft categories are, then it’s about time you sat on one of your own awards. Without lubricant.
Much love,
Not from GPY&R
Patt’s – surely everyone knows mobile, promo and activation are really boring categories. I mean BORING.
I think you might want to do a re-count!
I think you will find Whybin\TBWA Sydney won 16 Spikes awards, including 4 Gold and runner up for Media Agency of the Year
Please can someone do the due diligence on reporting this properly
Thanks
This article reads a bit weird.
No one at Patts is saying we think we are better than any other agency, won the world cup or ending poverty.
All power to DDB, it’s a great win for great work.
As was all the great Oz stuff. In fact Australian agencies dominated Spikes this year, many peeps from many shops will be proud of their efforts.
It’s also a good day at our office, Seven gold at an international show is no small thing and it’s nice to see it reported, even if the report makes us look like wankers.
The print grand prix (lol) and a bunch of craft awards. DDBollocks.
Regardless there’s some cracking work there. Well done to you both.
And as for the comment from: ‘yeah but’:
‘mobile, promo and activation are really boring’ < you should really consider a change in career.
….you need to think about another career.
Lynchy – can we have a table, so we can get the facts of who did what
Whybon and Leo Sudney got a bagful aswell.
I think it might be those two first.
For the record I love the VW print. And I think the most interesting work was in promo, digital, direct and film.
We need to revoltionise print. Radio winners from 10 years ago were better than last night.
Congrats, GPY&R! And I really don’t think ‘mobile, promo and activation’ is boring at all – some real good stuff came out this year from several great agencies throughout all sorts of non-traditional media, can’t say I remember any TVC or print which blew my mind.
think he was being sarcastic Kev.
Ah Australia. Love the way you don’t think craft awards are worth anything. That is why most campaigns in Australia look cheap and nasty (even the good ones).
Nice job boys and girls. Proud of you all.
Meh – I’m not so sure fella. ‘Yeah said’ please enlighten me.
I just did a quick count and got this top 5:
Whybin TBWA Sydney – 18 gongs
Leo Burnett Sydney – 17 gongs
George Patts – 11 gongs
DDB Sydney – 11 gongs
Leo Melbourne – 9 gongs
Surely it’s time to amend that press release now? Most golds. Sure. Most awards? Nup. Not by a stretch really.
It needs to be good in both ways idea and craft in any kind of medium, but that may just me…
When everyone is doing the sums on their fingers it’s important to remember a campaign isn’t three pieces of tin, it’s one. You’ll certainly only get one trophy.
You are clearly creative because your accounting is all over the place.
campaign wins count as one trophy, and one win.
I reckon seven gold puts Patts way out in front.
At Cannes and Spikes, gold equals 3 points, silver 2, bronze 1.
So on spikes own score system, Patts easily wins, (except that for some reason Spikes don’t add up promo, direct, craft, cyber in the agency of the year tally, it bissare, but that’s why they named DDB.)
Patts are right to claim most awarded, but hey, lucky day for DDB.
Nah do the maths, Whybin sydney is the most awarded with 16 spikes, with no campaign 3 peats
all of DDB’s points came from just one team at DDB sydney (steve wakeham and nick pringle) so how is that a whole agency’s work? hardly sounds like a case of agency of the Year to me
You guys are pathetic. Spikes Asia, meh! Since when this pathetic regional award is worth so much discussion? In your heart of hearts, each and everyone of you knows which awards are the ones who win and this one ain’t one of them. Your point is invalid.
Has anyone noticed that Naked has taken credit for the Coke campaign? Wasn’t Ogilvy the brains behind it?
Actually Spikes is very highly regarded in the industry and it was a tough year, so anyone awarded should be justifiably proud. Which means of course, that people like you, will be justifiably jealous.
Whilst The Spikes are yet another pointless award show, they do have it right not weighting mobile, direct, promo etc the same as the other categories. Like it or not, the powerful campaigns are still the big TV ones. Check the responses here and elsewhere to the recent Carlton work versus any of the case histories.
@ realistic
And a print campaign that runs once, how is that ‘weighted’?
You clearly fall in the camp of creatives (if you are one) who are only capable of thinking in TV and traditional media. I give you 2 years before you’re out on your ass.
why all the anger?
come on, it’s only a job and we’ve all had bad years… keep plugging away and you’ll have your day too.

Not angry, ok maybe a little. Just find it bizarre that Spikes still holds pro-active print and craft in such high regard.
