GPY&R, Brisbane takes out Best of Show at 2013 BADC Awards for Sun Safety ‘Shade Cinema’ app; Engine Group cleans up with RSPCA campaign
The 39th Annual Brisbane Advertising and Design Club (BADC) Awards were held on Saturday night at Rydges Southbank, rewarding the best creative work in Brisbane for 2013. With over 400 people in attendance and hosted by the very funny Dave Thornton, the night was a great success.
GPY&R took out Best of Show with its innovative Sun Safety “Shade Cinema” App for Brisbane City Council, whereby they installed Wi-Fi units in shady trees, each screening a different movie, in effect turning the park into an open-air multiplex cinema. The app uses the phone’s inbuilt light meter to register the amount of light on the screen so the movies only play in the shade, pausing if you stepped into the sun.
GPY&R took home an overall haul of two Gold, four Silver, nine Bronze and six Finalists for clients including Brisbane City Council, V8 Supercars, Suncorp Bank, Energex, Tatts Lotteries and Sekisui House.
Engine Group cleaned up with their RSPCA “All creatures great and small” campaign, winning two Gold and a Silver and a Bronze for Craft Art Direction for Kory McAvoy, as well as medals in Outdoor Charity/Community Service and Television & Cinema, Charity/Community Service. Engine Group took home a total of two Gold, five Silver, four Bronze and thirteen Finalists for this campaign.
RSPCA was also highly awarded in the Craft Categories with Alex Buckingham and Justin Overell of Ion Design also taking home three Gold each for Photography and Creative Imaging for this campaign. In total, the RSPCA campaign was rewarded with eight Gold medals, five Silver, four Bronzes and fifteen Finalists.
To recognise clients committed to producing great creative work, a newly introduced award for Client of the Year was presented to Sunny Queen Farms for its great work created by BCM Partnership – “Chook Tracka”.

In his final year as president of BADC, Matt Dye said: “We are very proud of the fairness and rigor of our three stage judging process and it allows for the best work to be awarded. This year we once again had a great panel of judges who exhibited their professionalism and expertise in rewarding some truly great work across the board.”

Oh give me a break. I know this is Brisbane and everything, but Best of Show for a ‘campaign’ consisting of an app which was at best minimally used and more honestly a complete scam.
I’m sure the case study was dandy, but really.
This epitomizes what is wrong with our biz and awards at the moment.

I think it’s out of line to jump under a story of an industry trying to celebrate great creative and leave a comment like that.
There was some very good work judged over the judging weekend – well done Brisbane!
