Goodoil director Michael Spiccia’s ‘Yardbird’ wins Dendy Award at Sydney Film Festival
Yardbird, directed by Goodoil’s Michael Spiccia, has won the Dendy Award for Best Live Action Short at the Sydney Film Festival yesterday.
Having screened as the only Australian film In Competition at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Yardbird was recognised by the Dendy judges as “An exceptional film, both in content and form, underpinned by a striking central performance.”
It is the tale of a young girl who lives in a wrecking yard and takes on the local bullies who travel out to torment her father. The script was written by Julius Avery and produced by Jessica Mitchell of Buffalo Films.
As a result of winning the Best Live Action Short, Yardbird is now eligible for an Academy Award nomination. Yardbird has also been invited to screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival in August this year.
Yardbird was edited by Jack Hutchings of The Butchery, with cinematography by Adam Arkapaw, original music by Elliott Wheeler and VFX by Fin Design & Effects.

Best short to come out of Australia in the last couple of years.
Congrats Julius, Michael and Jessica!
Amazing. Great stuff guys.
where can we see the film?
A brilliant film with a worthy winner.
That is awesome news, they spent a long time making it, all worth it. @wheresaid – it’ll be at MIFF next in August it says above. Those two directors would make a great team in the adworld too, VFX-real-performance extravaganza! Just don’t tell Exit or Good Oil!
