Free The Bid Australia launches Women Directors Database; showcasing work of over 100 directors
Advocating on behalf of women directors for equal opportunities to bid on jobs in the film, advertising, and TV industries, Free The Bid Australia has launched its Women Directors Database in tandem with the global Free The Bid initiative and has unearthed one of the industry’s largest resources to connect with female directors working in Australian broadcast media.
Free The Bid Australia’s category-searchable database showcasing the work of 100-plus Australian female directors – either signed to a production company or working independently – gives producers unprecedented access to female directors employed in diverse fields from advertising and fashion through to drama and documentary.

The database profiles up and coming to established directors and is also helping female directors to boost their international profile due to the site’s geo-tags and director portfolio archives. It also encourages women to expand both the style and scope of work they take on.

Still don’t understand why we’re not just advocating for women in all film related job descriptions. Seems to be just the top glamour jobs of directing and DOPs. If you were serious about it you’d showcase women in jobs ranging from the top roles down to, say, women gaffers, set builders, lighters, electricians, production designers, VFX artists. Oh wait, most of those are dull and unsexy, right?
If you’re going to push so hard for equal opportunity for female directors and DOPs then just bite the bullet and get advocate for full 50% crew (no matter how impractical that reality is). Otherwise this is just lady directors looking out for lady directors.
I’m a female carpenter and I’m upset that 99% of the jobs for set builds go to men. I know that 99% of carpenters are males, for whatever reason I don’t know, maybe ladies are not attracted to hitting nails with hammers for 20 years. But that doesn’t mean that 50% of the jobs couldn’t go to the 2% of female carpenters who are out there, working hard under sexist conditions.
Hey I just had an idea, ladies and gents, maybe instead of trying to allocate jobs disproportionately, we should encourage more females to enter the field, so we have 50% representation which leads to 50% allocation. Would that work, maybe?
Needless to say, advancing diversity (and beyond just gender) is a good thing for business, creativity and innovation. Building on what Limited says, programmes that address gender imbalance early on in careers is critical rather than just recommending quotas further down the track. CPC’s mentoring programme for directors at the start of their careers focuses on where systemic change can be made from the get-go, which I think is the crux of it.
