Droga5’s “Decode Jay-Z with Bing” campaign scores two Golds at 2011 Jay Chiat Awards in New York; M&C Saatchi, Sydney wins Silver for Pizza Hut, JWT Melbourne wins Bronze for MWF
Majority Australian-owned agency Droga5 New York has walked off with two Golds and a Silver at the 2011 Jay Chiat Awards for Strategic Excellence at the Strategy Festival, presented Thursday night in New York City.
Droga5 won for its multi-Cannes Grand Prix winning Microsoft Bing “Decode Jay-Z with Bing” campaign as well as its Puma ‘For the Joy of Sport’ campaign.
Bing won Gold in the Communications/Media Strategy and Silver in Brand Experience. Puma won Gold in Campaign for Existing Brand.
M&C Saatchi, Sydney – with digital shop Profero – won Silver for Pizza Hut ‘Feed a Friend’ in the Social Media Strategy category, while JWT Melbourne’s campaign for the Melbourne Writers’ Festival – which was shortlisted for the Cannes Grand Prix for Good back in June – picked up a Bronze in the Brand Experience category.
The team under Aussie expat Nick Law, chief creative officer at R/GA New York, also had a big night, with Nike ‘The Film Room’ winning Gold in the Creative Technologies category and Nike + GPS winning Gold in the Innovative Design category. In the Creative Technologies category, R/GA’s Nike ‘Boom’ won Silver and Converse ‘The Sampler’ won Bronze.
Darren Spiller, another Aussie expat, who is national chief creative officer at Fallon and his mainly Aussie expat creative team, won Gold in for The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas ‘Just the right amount of wrong’ campaign in the Campaign for a New Brand category.
The global advertising awards honor strategic thinking and recognize those professionals who have developed strong, innovative insights and initiated their work through creative that inspires both consumers and business.
Of the 68 short-listed entries in 10 categories, 39 medal winners were awarded, with 16 Gold, 9 Silver and 14 Bronze.

Previously called the 4A’s Awards for Account Planning, the awards were renamed in 2004 in honor of advertising legend Jay Chiat, who is credited with introducing the discipline of planning to the United States. In 2007, the awards began to accept international entries in an international category. In 2010, all categories were opened to international entries.
