Droga5 navigates a new course for Sail & Anchor craft beer with national point of sale campaign
UPDATED TO INCLUDE MORE EXECUTIONS – Droga5 Sydney has launched a national point of sale campaign to promote four new craft beers (Pale Ale, Amber Ale, Golden Ale and Kolsch) for Sail & Anchor, the Fremantle-based brand owned by Droga5 client Woolworth’s.
Strategic Business Director Ant Warne believes firmly that Sail & Anchor is a true icon of the craft-brewing scene: “It is in fact the pub where it all kicked off in Australia back in ’84,” he said. “In the pioneering and mutinous spirit of the brand, the team wanted us to look at craft beer differently – that brought to the work the courage of a seasoned sailor.”
The campaign execution will feature across 80 pubs where it will be available on tap, in 320 bottle shops and through 1300 stores.
Droga5 Sydney creative director Cameron Blackley said the insight was gained after years of research: “We established that pirates, buccaneers, privateers and coxswains are the fastest growing part of the community,” he said. “Yet no-one was giving them, let alone hook-handed parrot-buggering skippers, a voice.”
“We felt that Sail & Anchor was just right for the kind of man who will give their opinion in the form of a 40 pound canon ball in the face, then stoically enjoy their beer,” he said.

Sperm? Blowhole? Refreshing?
All over the shop like a mad man’s main-course.
the power of D5 planning is undeniable
watchout cannes titanium – D5 planning is coming
What next, ‘more refreshing than the semen from master bates horn pipe.’ this one’s got legs.. or maybe just one leg and a stump. Oh what fun we’re going to have!
drinking beer, sperm in the face, refreshing, yes, this is GOLD Jerry, GOLD!
it’s great. cuts through with surprise and great typographical style.
undeniably standout, but let’s not muddy the water – “interesting typeface” should never be substituted for “great typographical style.” interested to see if this “craft” product will remain true to it’s roots now that it’s had the bigger budget.
Best POS of the year
Jesus. A national point of sale campaign.
this is just as bad as that sporting crap thing.
pants.
Wait a minute…
Sail and Anchor is a Woolies Craft brand.
I dare say this makes it even cheaper.
Why the hy-ph-ens?
1. What’s a ‘than-the-spray’?
2. Is that really the best headline you could come up with?
More shite from D5.
Woolies killed this brand. http://www.brewsnews.com.au/2010/03/woolworths-kills-off-iconic-wa-brewer/ it’s a Woolies ad.
Can’t see why they lost VB.
This is quality with a kapital k.
I think they blew this out of a D5 art director’s blowhole.
Press release is funnier than the poster. Which is always a worry.
Very good work! Can’t wait to see hype that will ensue over Woolies home brand beer
It seems beer is not D5’s drink.
Publishing more executions does nothing to improve the analysis of the campaign. Au contraire. Trying to sound terribly British, are we? Even allowing for the excesses of art-direction it’s very, very self-consciously homosexual, and I’m not sure that’s a very good strategy in the Australian mass-market, especially for something as butch as beer.
Keep them coming. Feels like the creators watched a load of ‘Carry on’ films, then set to work to camping it up over a few sailor brews.
Best beer work ever.
D5 killing it!
Can’t believe Droga 5 Sydney are ranked no 76 on the latest AdNews rankings (check it for yourself even Etcom outranks them) with outstanding work like this
Best beer work ever.
D5 killing it!
Not worthy of PRing.
