DENT JOINS McCANN-ERICKSON SYDNEY AS SENIOR ART DIRECTOR

Chris Dent has given up the freelance life, taking on a senior art director gig at Mccann-Erickson, Sydney.
Dent has worked in Hong Kong, Singapore and Milan over the years and more rfecently has spent a lot of time freelancing at JWT when Simon Collins was ECD.
Since January 2001 he has freelanced via Creative Justice, Sydney) for various agencies including Leo Burnett, JWT, Patts, BWM, The Moult Agency, Euro RSCG Worldwide and DDI Adworks. Prior to that he was Art Group Head at D’Arcy Milan for two years after leaving Leo Burnett Sydney. Other gigs during the 90s included O&M Hong Kong, Euro RSCG Ball Partnership, Singapore and DMB&B Tokyu Singapore. His early career was in Australia, including stints at Sheppard Griffen and John Bevins.

Where was ‘Pea Bo’ in last night’s jingle fest?
Qantas was there last night as Singo was involved, AFL as Eddie was involved, Petit Miam as the footy show did a version, etc…An exercise in reverse branded-content. Instead of Advertisers creating a TV show a TV network ‘creates’ a show using ads. Cheaper than making an actual show from scratch and easy to invoke viewer loyalty through nostalgic jingles and patriotic australiana. There was no attempt to demonstrate how these were the ‘top 20’.

Yes, I’m not saying they’re not great ads but the show didn’t demonstrate how they arrived at that list. I’d like to know.
Singo was obviously one of the advisers to the producers at Nine. That’s why his beloved Razzamatazz is there, as well as Tip Top and might explain why Qantas is #1. But that’s the most even he could get away with. But Singo, like a lot of us, admires Mo & Jo which might explain a good dose of their best, including Tooheys, Meadow Lea and World Series Cricket. The Palace have far fewer than they deserve and four big ommissions were Antz Pantz ‘Sic em Rex’, Holeproof Computer Socks ‘Isaac Newton’, No Knickers ‘Piano’ and Dunlop ‘Aircraft Carrier’. (Nine could have filled an entire Top 20 with their ads). OTC ‘Memories’ from Patts, Vision ‘Saucepan’ from Gough Waterhouse and DHL ‘Budgie’ from Saatchi’s were three others that should have made the list.Toyota ‘Bugger’ shouldn’t have been included because of course it’s a Kiwi classic and neither should the pommie spot for Cussons Imperial Leather.
I think the Hoover – ‘That’s why Hoover is ahead of the rest’ series of ads, along with the Thin’s – not as thick as some ads too. Oh and Big M!
Other goodies include Apple ‘Aligators’, AMLC ‘Liferaft’, Rice ‘Sculptures’, Smiths Lites ‘Ballerinas’, Yellow Pages ‘Goggomobil’, Milk ‘Legendary Stuff’, RSPCA ‘All Creatures Great and Small, John West ‘Underwater Restaurant’, Mum ‘Every girl needs her Mum’, UV ‘Black Men’, (early) Castrol ‘Oils aint Oils’, (early) Commonwealth Bank ‘Which Bank?’, Cat Chow ‘Canary’, Nike ‘Roo Boy’, Rabbit Photos ‘Shark’, Kit-Kat ‘Baby’….there’s been a lot of great stuff over the years.

I already had RSPCA ‘All Creatures’ on the list… Sean’s finest hour (with Cesare Leonardi and Kaye Schirman) in the good old days at Leonardi & Curtis, Melbourne, circa 1987.
It couldn’t have been Sean who wrote that, the appostrophe should be after Cummins, not before the ‘s’.
