Curious’ first Oz theatre release ‘Winter’s Bone’ ranks #3 on specialist independent film chart
Curious Distribution has launched feature film WINTER’S BONE in Oz off the back of unanimously strong reviews.
The film ranked #15 on the Australian Box Office chart and is currently at #3 on the specialist independent chart behind Sony with MACHETE and Indian Bollywood title GOOMAL, which beat it out of the #2 spot by just a few thousand.
Says Sarah Noonan of Curious: “We’re really happy that Curious’ first theatrical release has been so well received by audiences. It proves there’s an audience for the film in Australia, and we’re confident the word-of-mouth will mean the film plays and plays.”
Winter’s Bone is one of the heavily touted films to figure in the upcoming awards season and run-in to the Oscars with Best Actress nominations for Jennifer Lawrence and Best Screenplay and Direction for co-writer/director Debra Granik expected.
The film won Best Picture (Grand Jury Prize) and Best Screenplay at Sundance this year, and Variety described it as “raw but utterly enveloping… the atmosphere of suspicion, foreboding and everyday misery would be too much to bear if not for the rich emotional anchor supplied by actress Jennifer Lawrence.”

I saw this movie by accident (long story and it is brilliant.
Confronting, Gripping. Somehow both depressing and uplifting at the same time.
I don’t think I’ve seen a movie in a long time where the threat of violence felt so real and ever persent.
It’s a beautiful piece of storytelling which lets the layers of different personalities unwrap slowly through the 90 or so minutes.
Go see it.
Good for your Curious. Awesome film.
