CB Exclusive: Top creatives Matt Kemsley and Garry Horner back together to create ‘Matterhorn’
CB Exclusive: High profile creative Garry Horner – who returned to Sydney after a three year stint at The Brand Agency, Perth in October last year – has joined Sydney-based JMK as an equity partner.
The move sees Horner team up again with JMK founder Matt Kemsley, his former partner when Garry was ECD at Whybin/TBWA, Sydney. The move also sees the agency rebrand itself Matterhorn.
Horner, one of Australia’s most awarded creatives, spent many years at world renowned CDP and WCRS in London before joining DDB Sydney as ECD in 1996 – taking out CB Agency of the Year the following year – followed by stints at Whybin\TBWA, Sydney and the Brand Agency, Perth.
At CDP he co-created – with Aussie Rowan Dean – the famous Hamlet Cigars ‘Photobooth’ spot, voted the Best Commercial of All-Time at Cannes in 1997.
Says Kemsley: “Garry coming on board will help accelerate our vision of becoming a top class globally recognised creative business. Plus I’m no longer the shortest person here.
“Despite the constant speculation about the future of the advertising business, Garry and I have always understood that the only thing clients really want is a smart creative strategy which leads to great creative work that gets results. Wherever and however that work may appear, clients just want results. That simple philosophy has always been and will continue to be our absolute focus.”
Says JMK co-founder Julian Martin: “Garry joining will help enormously on the journey to become an exciting creative company. With Garry and Matt driving that agenda, I will now be able to focus on growing The Brand Central strategy unit which will work with Matterhorn and the other companies working here in The Fort Street Group including Sitback (Digital) and Zonk (Data).”
Added Horner: “Being a partner in my own agency was the opportunity I wanted to pursue when coming back to Sydney. Working with Matt again is the perfect outcome and whilst we already have some great clients, we see a lot of opportunities for growth and of course have some fun along the way.”
Matterhorn are located at 39-41 Lower Fort Street in the Rocks and they can be reached on 92401997 or at matterhornrocks.com

Nice one lads, you’ll do well i’m sure.
Brilliant news. Scary photo. Sydney creativity just got a whole lot better.
Honestly Lynchy, if you’re going to vet every bloody comment you can hardly call this a ‘comments’ section. It’s more like ‘comments I approve of’. What a joke. Heaven forbid any negative comments on a start-up by two of the old guard.
