Casey Clarke and Zac Nairn’s Cannes Diary #1

Casey Clark and Zac Nairn, a young creative team from Dig are competing in the Digital category of the Cannes Young Lions competition. The pair write exclusively for CB.

Phew! We made it to corporate Coachella! 

After a tough two weeks gallivanting around Italy, we finally reached the ‘tax-deductible’ leg of our journey – woohoo! Naturally, we kicked things off with a first-class train ticket to Cannes and an extortionately priced glass of rosé (if the ATO asks, both were very necessary). And it’s been non-stop since. 

It’d be too hard to fit our experience so far into just one article*, so we’ve decided to take the highly original approach of writing a listicle – the things we’ve gained and lost so far.

*possibly because we waited until day 3 to write our first diary. 

Things we have gained so far:

– New friends!
– Excitement about the future of creativity.
– An impromptu dinner where we were pretty much the only guests without a three-letter title (which we only realised about five rosés too late).
– At least one of everything from the Meta snack bar.
– A humbling reminder that we are in fact tiny, tiny fish in a Palais-sized pond.
– A photo of Damon Stapleton smiling.
– A portrait of Casey from the Tubi stand. No, we won’t be sharing.
– Our 24-hour brief – eek!

Things we have lost so far:

– Casey’s favourite lip gloss (it’s Kosa if anyone finds it).
– A bunch of the receipts needed for the aforementioned tax deductions.
– Confidence in our idea for the 24-hour brief, hourly.
– The keys to our Airbnb. Luckily, a nice neighbour informed us Zac had left them in the door.
– Each other, after Casey realised she’d just agreed to spend 15 minutes sitting very still while the Tubi artist drew her. Zac couldn’t bear the second-hand embarrassment and bailed.
– Our shoes, thanks to a very scoundrel request from Adrian to get our piggies out at the CB drinks.
– Our voices, after singing very, very badly at the speakeasy.
– And finally, our marbles. Because as we write, we’re just minutes away from presenting our idea.
