Bondi Advertising’s Allen and Thomson creates part-real part-virtual ‘Message in a Bottle’ installation for this year’s Sculpture By the Sea
Inspired by a fascination with the sea both real and mythical Bondi Advertising’s Jonas Allen and Steven Thomson (above), in collaboration with Explore Engage, have created a part-real part-virtual installation titled ‘Message in a Bottle’ for this year’s Sculpture By the Sea exhibition at Bondi Beach.
To view the complete work titled Message in a Bottle, visit the iTunes store, download the free app ‘AR Mermaid’ then simply point it at the piece and all will be revealed. There is also a smaller version of the work at the Sculpture Inside marquee.
The virtual part of the sculpture is a homage to Lyall Randolph’s iconic Bondi Mermaid sculptures which sat atop Ben Buckler in the 1960’s. You can also view this piece in a variety of materials, including wood, marble, red jelly or the original bronze.
An extension of the work is an online public petition to revive the original works.
Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2011, the world’s largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition, will run from today until 20 November on the stunning Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. Each year the exhibition attracts approximately half a million people to see the works of over 100 Australian and international artists along the coastline.

Too hard

Oh dear.
great to see something different, only too hard for the Flintstones out there.
Great work guys, love the use of AR whilst telling a brand story of Bondi’s history. Look forward to seeing more great things from Bondi Advertising. GB.

downloaded the app and mini marker here at http://www.revivethebondimermaids.com and actually worked a treat. looking fwd to seeing the major work if i can be arsed w the crowds.
Only admen would make a fucking app for sculpture by the sea.
This works awesome great work Bondi Advertising and Explore Engage. Love the fusion of digital art with traditional art!
Good on them, here’s an example big, simple ad men style thinking mixed with some new technology. Idea first. Technology second. Well done guys, it’s great.
I think it is a great idea – those who think it is too hard have clearly never been to sculptures by the sea, and have no idea of the type of people who attend.
Well done.
Great work. Taking sculpture by the sea to the next level.
Uhmm, if they love the mermaids so much, why didn’t they use their time to sculpt two new mermaids then just stick them on Ben Buckler.
That’s how the first two got there.
24hrs if you read the whole article you ll see that’s what they’re trying to do …
You obviously don’t live in Bondi, the first mermaids were erected without council approval, they are out of the boundries. A private sculpter paid for them personally. Look it up.
Don’t sculpt bottles, sculpt the mermaids and re-erect them.
