Best Ad of the Day: Furphy Refreshing Ale ‘The Unbelievable Kick’ via Thinkerbell

With many creatives in the world self isolating, Campaign Brief introduces a daily dose of inspiration – Best Ad of the Day – chosen from the many submissions to our global creative site, Bestads.
Here’s a humorous beer commercial that is getting noticed in Australia.
Furphy Refreshing Ale has launched its first ever TV campaign via agency Thinkerbell Melbourne in what it hopes will bring a bit of lighthearted relief to beer and Australian Rules footy-lovers at home during this time of social distancing.
The ‘Unbelievable’ platform will celebrate the great Australian pastime of telling a tall tale over a beer.
For those outside of Australia, a “Furphy” [fur-fee] is an Australian slang expression for a rumour or tall tale, often exaggerated and shared. It’s also a beer brand.
While having a beer and a yarn in the pub with mates is not possible in Australia at the moment, there is nothing to stop people from enjoying a Furphy Refreshing Ale in the comfort of their own home and connecting socially through digital means.
The spot is directed by Good Oil’s Adam Stevens and celebrates the silver-tongued and supposed golden-booted in a tale of trial and triumph.

Your lion is waiting to be picked up. What colour would you like?
Nothing beats a great story really well told. Hats off to Strat, Suits, Creatives, Director and Production company. You all deserve to share in the success of this.
These rest of Australia does’t give a F** about AFL. Stop using it to flog shit. Nice ad tho.
You’re wrong mate..
Most of Australia follow the AFL.
Especially Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.. The other states are getting into the game more and more every year too.. Get your facts right!
Laugh out loud funny that hits the cultural mark. I don’t drink beer but I’ll by a dozen, to tip my hat.
Filmed at The Union Hotel in Brunswick…never seen any of these people before serving at this pub! Another idiotic ad…selling something no one needs!
I was watching Aircrash Investigations (how great it is that aircraft aren’t now spewing aviation kerosene into the upper atmosphere because they’re grounded) when the Furphy ad came on. I instantly recognised the old volcano in the background was Lityerang or Forest Hill (now clearly minus the heavy tree cover that once was there). Our farm was on the other side. From the top you could look towards the north and see forever. Down below was the Kingston Show Ground where the ad was shot. The old grandstand is extraordinarily evocative of past community use, of agricultural shows that once was held there with prize winning cattle and sheep and Clydesdale horses, of travelling dare-devil motorbike riders inside cages, of tent boxing, of Ripley’s Believe it or Not people inside, of beauty contests on backs of tray trucks, of beer being sold off trestle tables underneath that grandstand. It looks like a pop-up building from a children’s picture book. It’s a pity it’s classic heritage look wasn’t better captured or utilized. The short ad on constant repeat, because of the knockabout humour doesn’t wear all that well in the stripped down version, It appears somewhat incoherent, but the full length 1.14 version is a winner. It gets better – more amusing, more coherent, tighter – with every viewing. I suggest running it occasionally in the full length version instead of the repeated bare bones version.
I just wanna say the joke used in the ad is from the famous skippy ugle joke which he was the first to say if you did get it from him please credit him
I too recognised the hill and just the tree line as being my once beloved Kingston showgrounds. I didn’t even notice the grandstand until I came here and was able to pause it a few times. In my day the grandstand was a deadly dilapidated wreck bit so fun to muck around in.
There were never goal posts there in my life time and sadly no sport played.
Good ad.
