Australia’s Vince Frost creates a custom cover for Wallpaper* magazine’s August ‘Handmade’ issue
Sydney-based designer Vince Frost, has been invited to create a bespoke ‘Custom Cover’ for Wallpaper* magazine’s Handmade-themed August issue.
As a new twist to its award-winning Custom Covers project, Wallpaper* has commissioned some of the world’s best designers to create a series of unique covers for the issue. Readers will have the opportunity to select their own favourite – which will be personalised, printed, bound and delivered to their door.
Frost, who runs his renowned creative ideas studio of 30 people, Frost*, out of a Surry Hills warehouse, is Australia’s only contributor. Frost collaborated with long time friend, photographer Giles Revell, to create his cover and joins Jonathan Ellery, Tom Hingston, Peter Miles, David Carson, Alan Kitching, Margaret Calvert, Rob Ryan and James Joyce, as just some of the names invited to design the Wallpaper* Custom Covers. The covers are currently being presented at Wallpaper.com, where the magazine’s readers and subscribers can take their pick.
Frost (left) is one of Australia’s most notable creatives and has been the architect of many award-winning commercial and creative projects, in Australia and abroad. In 2006, a retrospective of Frost’s work was exhibited at the Sydney Opera House, which included the publication of a 500-page book, Frost*(sorry trees).
In 2008, he was selected as one of the Creative Directors for ‘Abundant Australia’, the Australian exhibition at the 11th International Venice Architecture Biennale in Italy. In December 2010, Frost was named as one of the 100 most influential people in Sydney by Sydney Morning Herald’s The (Sydney) Magazine and he is currently a judge and mentor for Qantas’ Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA).
For this special issue, Wallpaper* invited its 665,000 Twitter followers to give creative direction, asking them to name their preferred cover designer and tweet a brief related to the Handmade theme of the August issue. From cover to cover, the Handmade issue will tell the full story of how the third annual Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition, held at Palazzo Brioni in Milan during this year’s Salone del Mobile, came together. Acting as client, patron and creative director, Wallpaper* once again presented specially commissioned objects, installations, furniture, fashion, food and more by some of the world’s most respected designers, artists, craftsmen, brands and manufacturers.
Wallpaper* readers and subscribers can select their customised cover at wallpaper.com/custom-covers/2012 until 12 June. Videos of how some of the commissioned designers created their covers are also presented online.
The Handmade (August) issue of Wallpaper is out on 12 July.

Trees are sustainable resources. Why are we apologising for sustainably farming them in paper plantations?

First thoughts when it comes to the cover image.
It’s got Sagmeister written all over it.
Vince you are a legend 🙂
I love *frost. This is why design agencies at their core will always be what advertising agencies could never hope to be. Places where an Art Director is truly making art. . So This is why I stopped hanging out with agency creatives, and began to hang out with true graphic designers, photographers, type designers, architects and learnt that making a beautiful poster – or in this case, a book cover is that much more fulfilling than anything with a cheesy tag line and a product shot.
