Amberman soars over Melbourne’s CBD to promote a greener, cheaper energy grid

Amber has announced that Amberman, the world’s tallest inflatable tube person and embodiment of smarter energy, has taken over Melbourne’s CBD to celebrate renewable energy.

Amberman is no ordinary inflatable – he only takes flight when the grid is powered by renewable energy. When renewables are abundant, Amberman rises to 50 metres high, indicating it’s an ideal time to run energy-intensive appliances or charge an EV – taking advantage of not only greener energy but also lower electricity costs. When fossil fuels dominate Amberman deflates, serving as a visual cue to wait for greener, cheaper energy to return.

From Monday 2 December to Saturday 7 December, Amberman will take up residence at Golden Square Car Park, 217 Lonsdale St, Melbourne.

“Amberman is a fun way to show how we can all benefit when the grid’s greener,” said Chris Thompson, Co-CEO of Amber. “Every time he takes flight, it’s a clear sign that renewable energy is readily available, and that’s the perfect time to plug in, power up, and make the most of cheaper energy. It’s about making energy use smarter and simpler, helping everyday Aussies save money and lower emissions.”

Amber’s mission is to empower Australians to shift their energy use to times when renewables are most available, driving the transition to a 100% renewable energy future and providing cleaner, more affordable power for everyone. By integrating EVs and home batteries into the grid, Amber is helping households and businesses play a bigger role in driving Australia towards a 100% renewable energy future.

Amber is the only energy company in Australia that doesn’t profit from energy use. Unlike traditional retailers – which charge fixed rates and profit from the more energy you use – Amber gives customers direct access to wholesale electricity prices for a flat $22 monthly subscription fee.

Through Amber’s app, customers get access to real-time data on the grid’s renewable energy levels, allowing them to make the most of times when clean energy is abundant.

“At Amber, we like to do things a little differently.” added Thompson. “From being the only energy retailer to give customers access to wholesale electricity prices, to flying the world’s tallest inflatable tube person to visualise the rise and fall of those prices – who else would make the energy grid this fun to watch?”
