Additional Assets: Photographs by Filmmakers returns to m2 Gallery in Sydney, 23–26 October

Following last year’s hugely successful launch exhibition which drew an entire city block full of guests on opening night and went on to become the fourth most visited exhibition in Australia in April 2024 – Additional Assets: Photographs by Filmmakers returns to m2 Gallery this October for its highly anticipated follow up, featuring an expanded lineup of 50 local and international filmmakers.

Curated by directing duo VERSUS (Tanya Babić & Jason Sukadana), Additional Assets was borne from a simple insight, that filmmakers are inherently multi-skilled, polymathic storytellers whose visual language easily extends into other forms of visual expression. The grammar of filmmaking finds a new expression in these storied single frames. It’s a platform that celebrates this creative crossover and the rich community that surrounds it.

Born of personal projects, professional sets, and the spaces between, the featured works challenge conventional perceptions of filmmakers, highlighting the depth and diversity of talent within the filmmaking community and celebrating the creative versatility of artists beyond the realm of moving images.

This year’s lineup is a roll-call of creative heavyweights and emerging visionaries: Justin Kurzel, Mandy Walker, Glendyn Ivin, Lucy Knox, Bonnie Elliott, Aaron McLisky, Charlotte Mungomery, Matthew Thorne, Chloe de Brito, John Angus Stewart, Raghav Rampal, Stefan Hunt, Kiku Ohe, Stefan Duscio, Suzanne Kim, Matthew Chuang, Tig Terera, Marco Prestini, Ben Briand, Sarah Adamson and more.

“Additional Assets was built as a space for filmmakers to show another expression of their craft beyond commercial work,” says Tanya Babić. “And at a time when new technologies and synthetic imagery are increasingly part of our creative process, the show has taken on new meaning. It feels like an act of creative and cultural preservation, a reminder of the enduring power of perspective, authorship, and intent.”

“As filmmakers, we’re constantly surrounded by moments that beg to be photographed,” says Jason Sukadana. “They’re the fragments that sometimes sit between takes, on recces, travels or even between ideas. Most of them end up buried on our phones or thrown on Instagram just to be seen. Additional Assets gives those images a platform where they can be properly experienced and celebrated.”

Limited edition prints from this year’s exhibiting artists will be available for purchase. A limited edition zine featuring all works from last year’s inaugural exhibition will also be available for purchase exclusively at the gallery.
