Elrick at The One Show: There can be only One
Former BBH Asia-Pacific regional executive creative director Steve Elrick is judging The One Show in the Dominican Republic. Here’s his report on day one.
Well, there are seemingly endless award shows, but there can be only one One Show.
I have a soft spot for ‘The One’. It was The One that always guaranteed a consistently high standard when you cracked open the glossy pages. It was The One that always produced an annual where you were sure that as well as some of the best ideas on the planet (with admittedly a very US accent) there would be some of the most beautifully crafted work around.
And what would one expect from the organization behind that great movie about the greats : Art & Copy.
So, one was more than chuffed when one was invited to be One of the judges this year. And I can’t deny – when that seeing the judging was to be held in the Dominican Republic – I was double chuffed with a Cherry Mojito on top. Yup, tis a tough life …etc etc.
But then when I saw the list of fellow judges – which includes Aussies Dylan Harrison, Linda Honan and Micah Walker – I started to get a little anxious. One stellar cast – people who have been behind some of the most innovative work the States and beyond has seen. Have a squizz here and you’ll see what I mean.
Get your work picked by these guys and you really do have something to crow about.
And I think that’s why possibly the One Show does have a very special cache still.
One, single, World Class jury (with the occasional joker like me in the pack) that will see all the work and whittle it down to the very best of the best.
And after seeing the long serving One Club team in action, you can tell just how committed and passionate they are about stewarding the judges to only accept the best quality and craft that does justice to the legacy of the show. (And rather nice people they are too!)
So, that’s just the first day barely over…. One is looking forward to the rest.

When that guy is referring to ‘the one’ surely he doesn’t mean that ad from DDB Sydney featuring the guy in the bread costume?
Do they serve liquor while judging? I hope not.
Jack, I believe he is saying he has a soft spot for ‘The One’ which was a 2001 hit by the Backstreet Boys.
The song was very successful and went as high as number 35 on the Belgium charts.
Jack, I believe he’s referring to “The One’ which was a 2001 American action film directed by James Wong and starring Jet Li, Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham and Carla Gugino.
He meant the one job that he has been holding on to dearly but lost recently.
Interesting, Qwert. My second thought – and don’t they always make the best ads? – was they were referring to the old tv station promo.
