Oscar-nominated director Bruce Beresford returns with designer John Stoddart to bring the production to Australia for the first time. The critically acclaimed director brings opera into the 21st century, integrating projected imagery throughout to create an additional dimension to the performance.

Using a combination of live action, photographed and stock imagery, the Resolution design team developed a treatment designed specifically for the opera that would evoke the darkness and uncertainty of the ancient Belgian city, Bruges (the backdrop for the opera), tying the whole production together visually.

Says Beresford: “I can’t overemphasise how appreciative I am of the work done by Resolution for the production of Die Tote Stadt. Without the astonishing expertise and commitment of their team the opera would have been nowhere near as effective. I always knew that the imagery would be complicated and was always wary of involving anyone other than people at the very top of their field, people who could do more than just handle the technical complications – but who had a refined sense of design.

“The Resolution team have been a delight to work with from my point of view and I know that everyone connected with Opera Australia has been delighted, not to say amazed, at the visual elements contrived by the company.”
