Colenso BBDO Auckland pips GPY&R Melbourne for ‘Australasian King of Cannes 2012’ title
Colenso BBDO, Auckland led the Australasian agency pack in terms of Lions won at this year’s Cannes Festival of Creativity.
Colenso BBDO took home 12 Lions, ahead of George Patterson Y&R Melbourne and Whybin\TBWA Sydney with 8 apiece.
GPY&R Melbourne won the most Gold Lions during the week, taking home 4, aheasd of Colenso BBDO with 3 and Whybin\TBWA Sydney with 2.
The most interesting development at this year’s Festival was the rise of Ogilvy Sydney, which was placed fourth in Australasia, winning seven Lions – the biggest haul in its history, until only two years ago having to put up with the Singo ‘no awards’ mantra since the early 90s. However, Chris Ford, the American ECD responsible for the ‘Share a Coke’ idea, left the agency back in May 2011 – as did the creative team who worked on it soon after.
Australia won a record 59 Lions this year, almost three times the NZ total of 20.

It’s still great to see Patts back on top – since when do we compare Aussie agencies to NZ?
Great news Ogilvy, however I believe most of the haul was for Coke – the team who worked on it have well and truly left the agency.
You forgot to put droga5 and the monkeys on the list.
Australiasian agency tally??
Is that what it takes to keeep BBDO in the headlines after Cannes?
I read it as Patts clobbers Clem’s in Australia.
And it’s about time they got back on top.
Huge effort guys, huge!!
Well done Colenzo, you are miles infront in NZ.
But, Gold lions are what we all hunt and GPYR has 4. Plus a titanium lion.
I reckon they would be happier with that than your points win in Australisia.
giving each gong – regardless of colour, 1 pt ie the same weighting is ridiculous.
but even with a more realistic weighting like 3pts for gold, 2pts for silver and 1pt for bronze, Colenso BBDO Auckland wins.
um,no the above tally presented is not points but number of awards. However there’s a tiered weighting system and I would suggest by adding the worth of a Titanium, 4 Golds and number of finalists (all of which get you points for) Patts Melbourne could be in fact the Australsian King. Lynchy you quoted GPY&R Melbourne in a previous article titled GPY&R tops Aussie Lion with 72 points. How many did Colenso receive in total?
Where are the monkeys and droga 5 ranked ? Did either even get one short list ?
You guys are all pathetic. Like, seriously.
Would be interesting to see the points tally as valued by the Cannes system.
Lynchy?
It’s not about how many times you come third or second, it’s about how many times you come firstt.
Patts cams first the most times. Meaning they were the best the most times. They are the best performer. it’s that simple.
