Louie the Fly wins over 200,000 Facebook fans on way to saving his future role with Mortein
Louie The Fly reached an incredible 200,000 Facebook fans yesterday as the Mortein mascot of more than 50 years continues his campaign to save himself from being killed off forever.
Since its launch in September 2011 Louie’s Facebook page has become one of the most highly interacted with in Australia.
Following Mortein’s decision to reconsider killing off Louie from its TV adverts and placing his fate in the hands of the Australian public, Louie began campaigning for the 250,000 ‘save’ votes he votes he needs to secure his future.
People can vote to ‘kill or save’ Louie online or at Louie’s roaming roadshows that have been taking place up and down the east coast.
Louie The Fly said: “There ain’t no way the Aussies want to see me go and there is still life in this old fly yet. I want to thank all my fans for supporting me and proving that I am the most popular pest in the world. As for those people that voted to kill me off, I want to remind you that although I am bad, mean and mighty unclean, I’m still a fly with feelings. Here are some of the things the nice people of Australia are telling me on my Facebook page:”
“Omg if u kill him my nannu/grandfather will cry n cry becaus when I was little he sings the Louie the fly song to me all the time” [SIC.]
“The last standing aussie icon is, louie the fly! and as true australians, do you really want to take away, the last standing memory, we have of this beautiful country we have! louie was there through the good times and the bad times, louie has been part of of every australians life, if you, kill louie the fly. then why dont you kill the aussie meat pie, the thongs, the lammington, the aussie barbie, millions of fond memories, and of course me. louie is all we got left, louie is austalian” [SIC.]
“Louie has been around for a long time. We have grown up with him and learned to sing with him. He is iconic and synonymous with Mortein. He is much loved and recognized.” [SIC.]
“Killing off Louie is as bad as getting rid of Vegemite and other Australian icons!”

This is now getting officially embarrassing.
CONSTANT PR of this is doing nothing for you Euro.
And neither is CONSTANTLY adding ‘save Louie’ posts on earlier blogs as if the general public is somehow campaigning on an industry forum.
The blog gave its opinion of this months ago.
And no matter just how many hundreds of misspelled ‘sav louie i luv him hes an ikon’ posts you knock out, it doesn’t somehow turn this into a good idea.
Louie the fly Mortein
Love Louie
Here, here. Why can’t we be allowed a ‘vote’ on killing the TVC – it only succeeds in making me want to kill the client (the actress, and the real one). The agency has somehow made this campaign, based on a spurious assumption of consumer interest, into a piece of sterile, contrived advertising which only grates more with each viewing.
Maybe I’m showing my age, but are we really expected to believe that the average Australian has nothing better to do with his or her time than go online and vote on whether Louie the Fly gets ‘killed off’? Yes he is an Australian advertising icon, but please, give me a break.
So well put overit
‘omg if you kill him my grandfather will cry’. Are you fucken serious?
“Straight from rubbish bin to you”
Why only 250,000? It’s currently at 200,000 which seems very convenient.
I’ll bet the creatives on the account are praying they don’t get enough votes. At least in a year’s time they can start afresh with some new ideas.
200,000 have joined this.
Amazing.
There’s a lesson in this for everyone.
Never overestimated the hoi polloi.
Bansai obviously one of the numerous Euro staffers who’ve been peppering the internet for months.
