Australia’s finest cinematographers to mentor students at Kodak ACD Masterclass in Melbourne
Alex McPhee ACS, Brendan Lavelle ACS and Ellery Ryan ACS will mentor 30 participants in the second Kodak ACS Masterclass for 2011 to be held at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne from August 2nd to August 4th.
The first in a series of three Masterclasses to be held in Australia this year was conducted in late June at AFTRS in Sydney. At this event students and ACS members were treated to three days of intense learning from John Seale AM ACS ASC, Russell Boyd ACS ASC and Peter James ACS ASC.
The Melbourne Masterclass is expected to deliver more of the same. Applications were opened to ACS members as well as Cinematography students from Australia’s leading film schools and the three days will be dedicated to the art of shooting and lighting both 35mm and Super 16mm film.
Sessions will include hands on shooting exercises, lighting for multi camera set ups and some expert tuition in Steadicam operation by Louis Puli. The workshop will conclude with a visit to Deluxe to review the film to tape transfers from the previous day’s practical sessions.
Says Darren Swenson, general manager of Kodak’s entertainment imaging division, Australia and New Zealand: “The workshop in Sydney was an amazing learning experience for the participants. Despite the so called digital revolution it is very clear that there is a thirst for knowledge for shooting on film. With the calibre of Cinematographers we have lined up for this Masterclass the workshop in Melbourne will be another excellent event”.
Ron Johanson, president of the ACS went on to say: “It’s wonderful to see such accomplished Cinematographers giving up their time to pass on their experience to up-and-coming talent. I am sure the participants will come away from this event with a valuable knowledge that they can confidently take into their professional careers”.
Events like this require significant industry support and both Kodak and the ACS would like to acknowledge and thank the sponsors; LEMAC, Swinburne University of Technology, Deluxe and Cameraquip. The final Masterclass for 2011 will take place in Brisbane on the 27th – 29th September with an outstanding line up of Cinematographers set for this one also.
