Selling Julia: Ben Coulson on ABC 7.30 tonight
July 20 2011, 7:33 pm | | 8 Comments
Catch Ben Coulson, ECD of GPY&R Melbourne on ABC’s 7.30 tonight, who will be telling the nation how to sell Julia Gillard to the Australian electorate.
Coulso’s public profile has been lifted in recent months, with a national magazine article published, presumably part of a planned PR campaign by the agency to try to match his nationally famous national CEO Russel Howcroft.
Other ad people on the segment included Mark Mackay, national chairman of The Campaign Palace and Paul Gardner, chairman of Grey Group.
If you miss the segment catch it on ABC’s iView.

He has an enviable political campaign record . . .
Um…they have the largest government advertising account in the country. I reckon he would be up to speed with how to advertise to the big client in Canberra.
Good to see one advertising creative leader who is interested in more than self publicity in industry rags.
I’m glad some of us aim high to promote their profile than industry blogs.
Most creatives aren’t asked onto serious shows like 7.30 because they wouldn’t know the difference between a Prime Minister and a President.
8.52pm Working on government business and election campaigns are completely different. In fact galaxies apart.
But clearly you think it’s as easy as flogging soap.
In fact you probably think the ‘right man for the job campaign’ and T-Shirt rip off is pretty good as well. . . Maybe even insightful. Backed up by a facebook page & twitter feed; hey problem solved.
But they have the largest govt business in the country . . . gimmie a break. Wake up and smell the guarana.
Whoops, I may have missed that. Sad? No…
Good on him. I’d rather see someone in a foreign (to ad people) environment such as this than on Gruen. You know, somewhere where you’re not just preaching to the ocnverted.
The Coulso(sic) mentioned in the above article may have been an errant typo but I reckon you should run with it Ben.
In fact I think you should remove all the ‘n’s from your name.
“Be Coulso” has a certain je ne sais quoi. The likes of which we haven’t seen since the double vowel days of the 80s.
Ben, you back a loser this time. Did you read the article below this one?
News Limited chairman and chief executive John Hartigan today described comments by the Prime Minister about News Limited as “unjustified and regrettable”.
The Prime Minister was reported earlier today to have said: “I do believe that Australians watching all of that happening overseas with News Corp are looking at News Ltd here and are wanting to see News Ltd answer some hard questions.”
Says Hartigan: “The Prime Minister’s comments seek to draw a link between News Corporation operations in the UK and those here in Australia. The comments were unjustified and regrettable.
“There is absolutely no connection between events in the UK and our business in Australia.
“There is no evidence that similar behaviour has occurred at News in Australia.
“We have answered every question put to us on this issue openly. If the Prime Minister has more questions we would be happy to respond.
“No one is more appalled or is more concerned about what has happened in the UK than we are. It is an affront to everyone at News in Australia and a slur on the professionalism of our people, especially our journalists,” says Hartigan.
Julia’s biggest problem is her mouth. If you can remove that then you have a 50/50 chance.
