Iggy ready to re-record ‘The Passenger’
As previously reported by CB on the NZ Blog,Curious Film and Auckland’s Special Group persuaded Iggy Pop, theGodfather of Punk, to re-record one of his best-known tracks, ‘ThePassenger’, in a campaign for New Zealand broadband provider Orcon.
To launch the campaign, Curious director Daryl Ward shot two teasersstarring Iggy as he invites “guitarists, drummers, vocalists, dancers, bass players, and people who like to take their shirt off” to auditionfor his new band, which will perform live on 30 October 2009 in a liveonline cross with Iggy’s Miami studio.
Hundreds of Kiwis – some talented, others peculiar – have already auditioned online, and their videos can be viewed at www.facebook.com/orcon
Auditionsclosed today. Therefore, Iggy will now select eight Kiwi musicians toperform from their own homes, while Darryl Ward flies to Miami to shootIggy in his studio.
The footage will be used in TV commercials and a music video to promote Orcon’s Next Generation broadband services.
“It’sa ingenious way of showcasing technology in an interesting, relevantway. As far as we know, nothing like this has been done before, certainly not in New Zealand, and certainly not with a legend likeIggy,” says Matt Noonan of Curious Film.
The campaign is the first work for Orcon by its new advertising agency, Special, which won the account after a competitive pitch in August.
“We’re really excited,” says Special managing partner Michael Redwood. “Orcon is very focused and likes to do things differently – which was why we were so keen to work with them. This campaign is going to be a great real-time online event – with a bit of rock and roll.”

Advertising community cheers. Music community booes.
Iggy Pop, shilling himself out to an internet service provider, for money.
I guess we’re meant to be excited by this. And the ad-part of my brain is. But the rest of me feels that it’s all a bit sad really.
Yea, what are we meant to comment on? The low production value or just getting some old punk out of retirement?
Piss his ugly old head off
Go Iggy. Frickin genius. Get paid a shit load for an ad no one will see.
The music industry with laugh with him knowing they’ve taken the ad game for a nice well paid ride.
now that’s what i call punk. the greatest rock ‘n roll swindle!
I’m so glad Jimi died way back when. I’d hate to see him reduced to this.
Forever young…
What a pompous arse hole you are.
Fuck off, you’ve got brochures to deliver.
Go Iggy, you’re a legend.
How did you know I’ve got brochures to deliver?
And does saying that make you a tad pompous?
Never mentioned that delivering brochures was good or bad.
And pompous means ‘solemn, self important’.
Hurry, deliver, before it gets dark.
