Barney Banana is back and he’s a bit out of touch in new Maxibon campaign via SICKDOGWOLFMAN
After a long stint in the wilderness, one of the undisputed kings of the milk bar, Barney Banana, is back and better than ever, because he’s back in Bon form.
To herald the return of Australia’s favourite banana-flavoured primate, SICKDOGWOLFMAN has teamed with production company Haven’t You Done Well to produce a new integrated campaign for the launch of Maxibon Barney Banana, the combination of the Barney Banana ice cream bar with Maxibon’s signature dual-ended sandwich.
It’s been a while since Barney’s last gig and he’s a little out of touch, with his long-time talent manager, Glen, having to do a fair amount of work to get Barney back in the zone. Understandable given the last time Barney was in the spotlight petrol was leaded, Kylie Minogue was Charlene, and TikTok’s were just a weird biscuit with a clock on it.
Says James Orr, creative director, SICKDOGWOLFMAN: “As far as new flavours go, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. It’s not often you get to bring back a local legend, so we definitely felt some pressure to do Barney justice. The Haven’t You Done Well crew were the perfect partners to reignite the career of Australia’s most talented and delicious monkey.”
Director Jemma Cotter and animator Alyssa Smedley joined forces to bring Barney into the 21st century, with all executions shot on location and Barney beginning life as hand-drawn scamps before evolving into his final form in 2D-animated glory.
The campaign will run across TV, OOH, digital, and social, with a series of bespoke edits for Meta and TikTok.
Says Andrea Hamori, Chief Marketing Officer, Peters: “Barney Banana is one of those products Aussies have an incredible amount of nostalgia for. We knew if we were going to bring him back, we had to do it in a way they wouldn’t expect. Longtime Barney fans are going to go bananas for it, and it might even turn the heads of a few banana deniers along the way.”
