The Director’s Take ~ Laura Sargisson

Every director’s got a guilty pleasure show, a set horror story, and strong opinions on coffee vs. something stronger. In The Director’s Take, we get them talking. Next up is Laura Sargisson from Reel Factory.

First film/ad you ever fell in love with?

Nestlé Scorched Almonds, 1993. The little girl who wraps each almond individually for her family. I was completely hooked. So much so that my siblings got individually wrapped Scorched Almonds from me every Christmas for years.

One word to describe your directing style?

Hype-girl. I get genuinely excited about people and about what we’re capturing on set. Seeing something that started as just an idea suddenly come to life on screen still feels like magic.

Dream brief you haven’t shot yet?

John Lewis Christmas. Big feelings, beautiful storytelling, a little bit of magic.

Coffee, tea, or something stronger on set?

Coffee & Whittaker’s.

If you could only direct one genre forever?

Human stories with heart. I grew up loving those beautifully crafted ads that weren’t afraid to take their time and take you on a journey. There’s so much pressure now to hook people in the first couple of seconds, but I still think a great story earns attention. If the storytelling is strong enough, you’ll stay with it. And sometimes, if it’s really good, it might stay with you forever.
