Tegel highlights family connection around mealtimes in new campaign via dentsu Aotearoa
Tegel has launched a new campaign with dentsu Aotearoa that turns a long-recognised social challenge into a brand platform designed to champion connection over consumption.
The importance of family mealtimes is hardly a new insight. For decades, researchers have highlighted the role shared meals play in fostering connection, communication and wellbeing. Yet as busy schedules and modern life continue to put pressure on family routines, gathering around the dinner table has become increasingly difficult for many New Zealand households.
It’s this tension that sits at the heart of Tegel’s latest campaign. Across New Zealand, 70% of families and 42% of couples eat together fewer than seven times a week, while approximately 230,000 families report they almost never have every member present for dinner.
Rather than approaching the challenge through a traditional product lens, Tegel and dentsu saw an opportunity to reframe the category conversation. Instead of focusing on what’s for dinner, the campaign champions why dinner matters.
Drawing on research that links regular family meals with positive wellbeing outcomes, the work positions Tegel as more than a food brand. It places the brand within one of the few daily rituals that still creates meaningful moments of connection.
Craig Harrison, Head of Marketing at Tegel says the campaign reflects the role the brand has always played in Kiwi homes: “Tegel has been part of New Zealand mealtimes for generations. While the pressures on family life have changed, the value of coming together hasn’t. This campaign is about celebrating the moments that happen around the meal, not just the meal itself.”
Nicholas Gallagher, Group Account Director at dentsu Aotearoa says the work demonstrates how brands can build relevance by focusing on the occasions they enable rather than the products they sell: “We weren’t trying to claim a new truth. Instead, we looked at what role Tegel could credibly play within that conversation.”
The resulting platform shifts the brand conversation beyond taste, value and convenience, giving Tegel a distinctive position within a highly competitive category.
At a time when many food brands continue to compete on functional benefits, the campaign seeks to create emotional relevance by focusing on the social value of mealtimes and the relationships they help strengthen.
For dentsu, it’s an example of how familiar truths can still unlock fresh opportunities when viewed through the lens of brand role rather than product benefit.
The campaign is rolling out nationally across TV, VOD, OOH and digital channels.
