VANDAL Gallery presents Infranatura: An infrared photographic exhibition by Raúl O. Lejarazu Machin

Infranatura, a new exhibition from Raúl O. Lejarazu Machin is currently running from 10–30 November, Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm. Last Friday, the exhibition opened with a well-attended launch event that drew creatives from across Sydney to VANDAL Gallery, 16–30 Vine Street.

Presented as part of the Head On Photo Festival 2025 Open Program, Infranatura sits within a curated selection of independent and artist-run exhibitions recognised for strong artistic vision and contribution to the photographic community. The Open Program celebrates the diversity and ambition that define Head On, highlighting artists who continue to push contemporary photography forward.

The exhibition is supported by Instituto Cervantes, whose focus on Spanish language, culture and artistic exchange strengthens the connection between Spanish and Australian creative communities.

VANDAL’s gallery space has long been a hub for bold and unconventional exhibitions. With Infranatura, the studio once again transforms into an immersive environment where art, technology and imagination meet. Located between Redfern and Chippendale’s creative precincts, VANDAL Gallery remains committed to showcasing progressive art from both local and international innovators. Past exhibitions have featured artists such as Craig Black and Aley Wild.

Infranatura is Machin’s second solo exhibition. The project, developed over three years, took Machin through national parks across Australia as he explored how light and colour influence our emotional connection to the landscape. Using infrared photography, he reimagines Australian flora as ghost-like, otherworldly forms, drawing on his first impressions of Australia after moving from Spain, when the environment felt unfamiliar and surreal. Although infrared imaging has scientific and military origins, Machin redirects the medium toward themes of beauty, fragility and the natural world, revealing subtle variations in plant health and resilience in Australia’s extreme climates.

Says Machin: “Infranatura is a love letter to nature and science, and a reminder of our environment’s fragility. This project is about seeing the familiar in a new light and rediscovering our connection to the natural world.”

Machin has lived in Australia for more than a decade and has worked across commercial and artistic practice in both Madrid and Sydney. With a family background in science, his work sits at the intersection of scientific curiosity and visual storytelling. His commercial clients include Microsoft, ANZ, Ferrari, Dyson, Ikea, Nespresso and Macquarie University.
