When did Cannes stop paying for air fares?
When they dropped any pretence of existing just to squeeze every last dollar out of the industry that it can at every opportunity
Cannes Lions only pay for Judges’ accommodation and transport to and from the airport. They once treated judges to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, but not sure that happens any more. Cannes never paid airfares, that was always the agency’s cost.
They used to pay Tavel. Trust me, there is no way my agency would have paid for people to fly to France. But that was when there were less than 10 categories.
The opening and closing ceremonies are available to everyone with a delegates pass. The judges definitely have those, so that remains unchanged
Only people in advertising would be so vanity-obsessed to pay to travel overseas to work for free for 5 days and then receive nothing at the end of it. And they wonder why people don’t treat the industry seriously….
We’ll see who is happy to pay for the privilege soon enough.
104 million UK pounds in revenue.
But you fly yourself there to judge.
What a business model!
Just a little sceptical of this, in the past the joke was the submissions process was a mandatory but everyone knew the judges are hand-picked. Those selected never go through the process.
Hope the new regime takes this seriously.
What’s annoying about this is the same people from the same small pool always get selected. You can almost write the press release now of the 2025 jury.
I have worked on campaigns that have won Grand Prix and over 30 total lions and a few years ago when I asked someone in the know what more I needed to do to get on to a Cannes Jury the answer was ‘have more influential friends’.
It would be a refreshing surprise if that changed, but the smart money would bet that it doesn’t.
