Q&A with Are Media head of ePublishing and Syndication Joe Revill on contentshop launch

Are Media’s head of ePublishing and Syndication Joe Revill (above) expands on the media company’s new contentshop offering, exclusively with Campaign Brief.
What is contentshop?
Joe Revill: contentshop is a new image library from Are Media with hundreds of thousands of images produced by Australia’s best magazine editors, art directors and stylists.
The library draws from Are Media’s market-leading brands including The Australian Women’s Weekly, Australian Gourmet Traveller, Country Style, Belle, Australian House & Garden, Inside Out, Home Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens and more.
Why have you launched contentshop?
JR: The explosion of content consumption and access in recent years has seen a real need for creators to be able to source original, quality imagery.
Are Media’s incredible photographic library can now provide a unique service which offers images, created by our mag brands creative teams, to the wider creative community across Australia and New Zealand.
The launch of contentshop means that marketers, creative directors, designers, PR agencies, social media managers and other publishers will – for the first time – have easy access to Are Media’s most beautiful images across the food, home, interiors, beauty, fashion and lifestyle categories. This is what makes contentshop stand apart from an ordinary stock image service.
It is exciting to be able to open up our photographic library to creative people and industries, giving them the opportunity to tap into the vision of Australia’s best magazine editors and art directors.
How many images are in contentshop?
JR: Today there are around 200,000 images available to license but the library will continually grow, with more being added every time our brands publish a new issue.
How many images will it contain in 12 months?
JR:This is very hard to answer in exact volume terms, as there are many variables when it comes to copyright. Not every image we publish can be licensed to a third party. There are often a variety of external copyright holders involved (photographers, talent, homeowners and so on) all of which we have specific terms with.
Will images from other publishers be added to contentshop?
JR: Not at this stage, our focus is on our own content only.
Is contentshop a stock image library?
JR: No. It is more than just stock. It is a library of images plucked from the actual pages of Australia’s finest magazine brands, so they have been crafted by the best photographers, designers, stylists and editors in the business.
Does contentshop include images from all Are Media brands?
JR: The majority, yes, including archives from magazine brands which are no longer in circulation. There are a couple of brands which we do not license due to pre-existing commercial agreements.
What is the cost to use contentshop?
JR: You can search the library for free! Then, if you like what you see and decide to license an image, there are a few ways to go about it. Either pay-as-you-go (click-to-cart and transact with your credit card) or if there is a need for volume-based agreements then we also offer enterprise models. The cost of a single image license ranges from just $200; this rate varies depending on the usage required. For companies that want an enterprise agreement, there are significant discount opportunities.
