Agency leaders unite to call for industry support to help debunk vaccination safety myths

Agency and industry leaders have joined forces to ‘fight fear with facts’, debunk myths about the potential risk associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, and to encourage all Australians to get vaccinated, as soon as possible (subject to counsel from their GPs).
A fast-growing cadre of industry leaders has enthusiastically thrown their support behind today’s launch of the @TheFactsination initiative, a creative collective of ideas to address fears and hesitancy towards the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Supporters include Dan Monheit, Rose Herceg, Jules Lund, Henry Innis, Kieran Moore, Aden Hepburn and Chris Savage.
The @TheFactsination initiative supports the open letter published last week by an alliance of prominent health experts urging Australians to get jabbed with AstraZeneca as soon as possible.
The health experts also aimed to debunk myths, confirming: we have a one in a million chance of dying from the AZ jab, and that the AZ and Pfizer vaccines have a similar profile in preventing severe disease from the Covid-19 Delta variant.
Says Dan Monheit, @TheFactsination spokesperson: “The risk of a fatal side effect from the AstraZeneca vaccine according to health experts is one in a million. The risk of fatality resulting from typical daily activities such as taking a bath, having sex, or walking down the street, are far greater.”
Monheit said @TheFactsination initiative has been built around an Instagram account showcasing the A to Z of ways people are more likely to die (according to internet ‘facts’) than getting an AZ jab, putting the risk into proper perspective: “Our industry specialises in communication – so we’re calling on all agency leaders, clients, suppliers and colleagues to please help share information that puts the risk into perspective, and encourages those who can, to get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
Says Aden Hepburn, @Factsination supporter: “Our ask of the industry is super simple. Go to the Instagram account @TheFactsination and share as much as you can over the next few days across all your social channels. Ask staff and clients to do the same. Spread the word! Or create and share your own content – tag @TheFactsination so we can pick it up and repost it.”
Says Rose Herceg, @TheFactsination supporter: “We need to help to put the risk into perspective. There’s only one way out of this – and it’s together.
“We are a powerful industry, and we are calling on the leaders to please use the talent and influence of their teams and businesses to attack vaccine hesitancy due to misinformation. Please, join in and get this done. Share this content far and wide!”
Says Henry Innis, @TheFactsination supporter: “Health authorities have made it clear – the only way we will get out of lockdowns and severe restrictions, is by 80% of the population being vaccinated. There is ample vaccine available, but many are refusing the AstraZeneca vaccine because of misinformation and unwarranted fear of risk.”
The @TheFactsination team will also be driving a media publicity campaign targeting key journalists, radio and TV hosts, and influencers to help ‘spread the word’ and bust the myths.
Says Kieran Moore, @TheFactsination supporter: “Media agencies – please, use your media influence to get the big media companies to support this. PR firms – use your contacts to spread the word. All – tap into your ‘influencer’ networks to attack these myths and misconceptions please. But most importantly, implore your colleagues and friends to separate fact from fiction.
“Together, we can actually help save lives, prevent mental health issues amongst our family, friends and colleagues, save jobs and help Australia and Australians get back to our special way of life.”
Huge gratitude to Good One Creative for its brilliant work on the original @TheFactsination content “The A to Z of things more likely to kill you than the AZ.”

Knew those triple quarter ponders were out to get me. Awesome stuff.
ways to die.
This vaccine push goes even harder than a used car salesman that’s going out of business.
What an awesome initiative. Would love to see these animated.
Listen to the advice of the expert medical bodies in Australia, not the interpretation of this information by some people working in advertising.
You mean the majority of experts who say consult your physician, but this is the best course of action for most people? What a lazy, crass and unnecessarily alarming comment…
Lovely bit of content for a great cause.
Awesome to see !
Let’s get vacced and get out of this shit show asap
Reckon we can get an execution that reminds people about Scomo’s reluctance to commit to ending restrictions once we hit a world-leading 80% vaccinated?
Thumbs up from me
Australian population = 25,671,900
80% of 25,671,900 = 20,537,520
AZ chance of death = 1:1,000,000
20,537,520 / 1,000,000 = 20
Potential AZ deaths = 20.
At a time when one Covid death is too many for our Zero Covid approach, 20 potential deaths is a small price to pay.
FWIW there’s been 7 deaths in Aus from AZ related blood clotting already. So not sure how accurate those figures are.
I’ll stick to medical advice thanks. Not some random facts from the internet and a 2-bit illustrator.
Leave it to the medical experts
Whose medical advise you sticking to?
Cos it’s not the same advise all the countries opening back up are following
Your calcs assume that AZ is the only vaccine available to that 80%.
It’d be even lower than even your predictions.
Creativity at its absolute best.
You mean the medical advice telling the public to get vaccinated? The advice of the majority of the countries leading medical experts that AstraZeneca is safe?
So in that case, these legends are knowingly flogging a vaccine that’s proven to be more dangerous than other options available/to be available?
Cool.
Yeah, let’s wait until we have options, because that’s what my privileged ass demands!
Seriously, I am sick of all these idiots sitting on their hands waiting for ‘options’ while people sacrifice their lives, their freedoms and the youth and education of their children.
Wait for options if you want, you can stay indoors until then
In both outbreak and non-outbreak situations, ATAGI considers the benefits of COVID-19 prevention to outweigh the small risk of adverse events including TTS in those 60 years or older. ATAGI therefore reinforces the benefits of vaccination with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in these individuals.
In outbreak settings, such as that currently occurring in Sydney, the benefits of vaccination are greater. Given the changes to the risk-benefit equation, ATAGI recommends adults under 60 years who do not have immediate access to Comirnaty (Pfizer) should re-assess the need for vaccination with AstraZeneca given these greater benefits.

Great Work Prince et.al.
But not when it comes to these vaccines! How dare I make my own risk assessment and want to wait for a non-AZ option.
Great to see Dr Norman Swan strongly support @TheFactsination. Also Dr Ross Walker coming out today supporting the AZ jab fully, and encouraging all to get vaccinated, fast (subject to their GPs counsel). Plus the group of Australia’s most senior medical experts come out last week encouraging we take AZ if we can get it, and that the AZ vaccine is as powerful vs Delta at Pfizer. So very good to see our industry (apart from the anti-vaxers of course) do something to help save lives and get Australia back on track.
Why do you want to wait for a non-AZ option though?
Because you’re scared you will die from it?
I’m just waiting for pfizer because it’s more effective (60% vs 90%). Plus, there’s hoards of lazy boomers out that have had months to get the vax and still haven’t, so I’ll wait another month or two and do what ATAGI has advised.

Selfies help reframe AZ to familiar faces.
Great work guys. We’ll get there
You can repurpose as many medical freedom slogans as you like, but fact is, vaccination isn’t a personal choice, it’s a matter of public health.
I get the ‘big names’ that are backing it, but can anyone shout out the creatives who actually came up with this cracker and executed it?
Dear Advertising,
Please stick to Coca Cola and KFC.
Great bloody work that will have a genuine, important, real world impact. Bravo.
Which vaccine protects me and my family from other people’s uncontained anxieties and opportunistic virtue signalling?
If you’ve ever non-ironically used the term virtue signalling there’s a 100% chance you’re the worst person in every room you enter.
Please stick to your own deluded anti vax Facebook groups
Applaud the sentiment, but clearly a terrible idea terribly executed.
My Two Cents:
We need the return of Gruen, or something similar, and a competition between agencies to do a pitch-like segment or complete program, even a series of programs, where agencies create imaginary commercials – like they do on Gruen – but devoted entirely to ideas on getting people to get vaccinated. Not just one against one, but many, many pitched ideas. No discussion of other advertising issues. This is a rich vein, and I reckon agencies would be itching to show their wares. It could run week after week. or night after night. This avoids the stifling conservatism of a government client, which as we all know kills all the good and brave ideas, so we end up with the dross that passes for the covid advertising so far. Maybe a glittering prize, maybe viewer voting, I don’t know. Just get it happening ABC or Zapruder or Cordel Jigsaw or Nine or SOMEONE! Why hasn’t someone thought of this?
I love all the adland anti-vaxxers I know whose bodies are suddenly temples to protect from rare clots – despite the fact that they work insane hours, are low key alcoholics and take ketamine every second weekend. Namaste idiots.
So you’re saying there’s a chance!
My social media feed is filled with a bunch of sane thinking, normies who have got the jab and moved on with their life! I’m finally hearing all the nutters spouting nonsense google research!
Found the woke bloke.
How about we leave medical advertising to the medical advertising agencies, and all these ad folk go back to flogging toasters and car seats
Isn’t this just dumb ways to die but in a book format?
I’ve not seen any medical advertising agencies (are you one?) come up with anything, so I’d say let’s not leave it to them eh
If you’re going to put something ‘pro-active’ out there it’s just possible, it may be:
• not very informed
• not endorsed by experts
• not connecting
I’m waiting for Pfizer just to spite this cringey effort.
Writ large in Campaign Brief.
Needing fed troll?
I read this and now I’m terrified that sleeping has a 1 in 32 chance of dying, and walking down the street a 1 in 600. I have enjoyed living, but have resigned myself to dying in the next 32 days due to sleeping … whilst being impressed that I’ve walked down the street more than 600 times and haven’t died once.
If I understand correctly, I’m fairly sure all these stats are “chance of dying in your lifetime”, i.e. “chance of your death occurring because of X” not accumulative each time you do the activity.
tbh it sounds like the team behind it just made a bunch of stuff up from a few google searches. i really want to like this but can’t get over the list of industry names associated with it for no reason, plus the terrible comparison data.
If these kind of initiatives were only able to be done by government and ‘medical advertising agencies’, we’d be left with the same basic, dry work that has zero impact. This campaign is having a crack at making a positive difference in a fresh way… in a time when we need a lot more of that.
LOL. You have to be kidding. Fresh is not a word to describe this.
Anybody here volunteering to be the lucky millionth person that dies from this?
By people who got the Pfizer jab…
For such an ego-less campaign, there’s a lot of egos defending it
Slam back an AZ now, then go for a Moderna Chaser later.
I don’t want the COVID-19 vaccine, I don’t trust what they put it in.
I got 99 vaccines but Astra Zeneca ain’t one.
I’ve taken worse stuff before!
What is it about this virus that makes everyone think they can achieve the same level of expertise that medical professionals acquire over decades of training and experience? Just listen to the bloody experts and get the jab. Any jab.
Save your big decisions for deciding when to wash the car or have another beer.
