The Junior Mafia podcast launches to celebrate young talent in the industry
A new podcast has launched, The Junior Mafia, to celebrate and share the stories of young talent in the creative industries.
Hosted by DDB head of planning Dom Hickey and VMLY&R junior planner Jade Hickey, the series flips the script – speaking to the bigwigs in marketing and advertising – to give the young people a platform on the big issues.
Says Dom Hickey: “We want to hear from the people pushing change in adland from the bottom up. The next generation of makers and creators doing amazing things – both inside and outside the industry.”
The all-female co-hosts promise diversity, intelligence and enthusiasm with each episode starring a future big talent in the marketing, advertising and creative industry.
Says Jade Hickey: “Enthusiasm is contagious especially when you’re new to the industry. We want to take that out of individual workplaces and rally a network of switched on and motivated people who will go on to shape the future of adland.”
Fortnightly episodes will feature a range of talent and disciplines from creative thinkers to up-and-coming strategists under 30 in the advertising, media and marketing sectors.
A sneak peek of what’s to come is below:
Episode one features DDB Sydney planner Nate Kwok, discussing the Young Lion competition, the connection between mindfulness and strategic thinking and what it’s like to jump from client to agency side.
Episode two features The Works planner, Lucy Batchelor, discussing gender neutral creative briefs, the power of introverts, and diversity in adland.
Future episodes will also feature VMLY&R senior data strategist, Vipul Hiray, Cultiver content producer, Emma Breislin, Clemenger BBDO planner Vince Usher, DDB business manager Mobolaji Komolafe and freelance planner Max Learmont.
The first episode is now live and available wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts.
If you’d like to take part, or nominate someone, email Dom and Jade at juniormafiapodcast@gmail.com.

What a coupla legends!
If this family is tying cinder blocks to old ad blokes and throwing them overboard… I want in.
I hope this new, refreshing batch of young, middle class, white people will be just as cool as the last batch of young, middle class, white people.
Last I checked Kwok didn’t sound like the name of a white person
Gronk.
Sooooooooo many of my white middle-class friends are called Mobolaji
Yep, Vipul Hiray is the most ‘white’ name I’ve heard for a while.
Or
How about you f@$k off with your negative shit when some people are actually taking the time and effort to improve the industry, you utter pelican.
Finally! Now I can listen to junior planners talk for half an hour straight when I’m not at work! xoxo
When did the Mafia become cool? A corrupt clan that will resort to any tactics to make a buck and destroy society. Show some respect for those old creatives because they did the planning as well as the creative. The arrogance of youth is a recipe for disaster because they simply do not understand the true meaning of inclusion and diversity.
You lost Eugene? Did you mean to mail this rant to the Daily Tele?
Does everyone in this industry do coke?
