After a decade Jetstar switches its ad account from Big Red to J. Walter Thompson Melbourne
Jetstar has appointed J. Walter Thompson Melbourne to be its Australian creative agency partner, after a competitive pitch process that commenced last October.
Says Michael Godwin, MD, J. Walter Thompson Melbourne: “We’re thrilled to be Jetstar’s new lead creative agency and enjoyed what was an extremely well managed pitch process.
“Jetstar is a brand that exists to help make the world more accessible to more people, every day. What a wonderful platform to build inspiring, motivating communications upon. We can’t wait to start doing so.”
This latest win caps off a stellar 12 months for J. Walter Thompson Melbourne, during which it secured multiple high profile new clients, transformed its in-house capabilities and more than doubled in size.
Says Godwin: “Thanks to a period of significant transformation and investment, we offer one of the best-qualified retail teams in the country, supported by an unrivalled end-to-end in-house production capability. We look forward to leveraging this to deliver effective communications for Jetstar with great speed and cost efficiency.”
Says John Gutteridge, CEO, J. Walter Thompson CEO Australia/New Zealand: “By any measure, whether it be the quality of our creative output, or record YOY growth, 2015 was a year like no other for J. Walter Thompson in Australia.
“Welcoming Jetstar to our Melbourne office client roster will certainly help continue this positive momentum into the year ahead.”
Jetstar chief commercial officer Catriona Larritt said that after 11 years with Big Red, the airline commenced its first ever creative agency review last year.
Says Larritt: “We met with a number of agencies who all demonstrated different strengths and capabilities, but in JWT we saw an opportunity to simultaneously stretch the brand, whilst building on our very strong foundations. It was a rigorous process and JWT challenged us, and themselves, every step of the way.
“We would also like to thank Ted, Hugh and the team at Big Red who have supported us through this process and for the past 11 years.”

Great news for JWT. Can’t wait to see some new work off the back of this win.
Thank god.
They launched it well and then strangled it to death for 10 years.
I like this pairing.
Big Red to be rebranded ‘Biggish Red’.
Big Red has been around for 11 years.
Old CD Guy we all know who you.We also know your career history.
You never had the guts or guile to start your own shop.
Ted Horton had loads of both plus genuine talent.
So back off with your smart arse comments you fabulous f——- nobody.
Hey Big Red, I’ve put Aussie Home Loans up for pitch at Lowe Sydney, have a crack at me.
This is like hearing Tony Abbott lost the leadership.
Relieved and don’t really care if the new guy is any better. Just relieved advertising may get a tiny bit better.
Consistent tone of voice. Consistent propositions. An airline that was for the people. Ted knows how to flog stuff while still building the brand.New young people suddenly beome marketing directors. You didn’ t deserve to lose that one Ted. Watch JWT stuff it up within months. (And they’ll still be using Ted’s footage.)
For all those having a crack at Big Red, I believe you’ll find they themselves chose not to take part in the pitch.
Credit where it’s due – Ted’s done a great job of taking over where MO ‘n’ JO left off and earning a motes in the process.
Sadly for those Expat AdTwats and Lovies, who believe Sydney and Melbourne are suburbs of London, this is the kind of badvertsising the boardies, singlets and flip-flops love down here. J Walter Torture won’t change that one bit.
