Wilf Sweetland’s LIA Diary from Las Vegas #1

Wilf Sweetland (above), CEO at Sweetshop is representing Australia as jury president on the Production & Post-Production and Music Video jury, where judging is currently taking place in Las Vegas. Here Sweetland reports exclusively for CB.

Arriving into Las Vegas you are reminded of a few things. It’s a bit of a weird joint. The city grew in popularity in the ‘30s when they legalised gambling and reduced the amount of time required to be a resident before one could file for divorce (6 weeks). They used to test nuclear bombs about 100kms away (with fallout raining down on ‘Atomic City’ as it was known). And they build escalators on the footpaths so you don’t have to exert yourself by walking up stairs. Trump’s got a place here too – all on it’s lonesome.

Our Jury commenced today working our way through 19 hours of entries to get to a shortlist. We got about half way through – not bad going on day 1. Some nice work but many jurors have commented on what hasn’t been entered as much as what has. We’ll finish creating the shortlist tomorrow before doing finalists on Sunday and awarding Metal on Monday.

As always it is a pleasure to be at LIA. The jury members are both experienced and knowledgeable and it is an honour to be asked to lead them.
