Stephen de Wolf’s Cannes Diary #2

Stephen de Wolf, executive creative director at Clemenger BBDO Melbourne is representing Australia on the Cannes Direct Lions. de Wolf, along with most of the other Australian and NZ jurors writes exclusively for CB.

Day three and Cannes has come to life. The Boulevard de la Croisette is bursting with industry folk and the seaside town has now fully transformed into the Festival of Creativity. Until now we’ve been judging in an eerily empty Palais des Festivals, but today we sat behind closed doors as hundreds registered and started filling the seats of the lecture halls.

Inside our room we finalised the shortlist. Our President Nicky Bullard reinforced the criteria for Direct we’d hold the work to: ‘do you know me?’, ‘does the work move me?’ and ‘did you make me do something, and can you prove I did it?’

After two days of little discussion and simple voting, we started to debate the work we thought met the criteria and as a jury could stand in front of as our shortlist – the original two thousand or more entries is now a shortlist of over two hundred.

The fun starts tomorrow as we get to the most exciting part, awarding Lions. No doubt the conversation and debate will continue as we stay locked away long into the night.
