Spinifex Gum’s musical project Dream Baby Dream, led by Marliya Choir and The Cat Empire’s Felix Riebl, launched at the Garma Festival last week, issuing an invitation to everyday Australians to use their voice – in song – to call for change for First Nations People in our country. The ever-growing track, Dream Baby Dream, enables Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to lend their voice in demand of a First Nations Voice in the Constitution.

Dream Baby Dream, a song made famous by Bruce Springsteen, was rewritten in English and Yindjibarndi for the sole purpose of bringing Australia together to heal divisions of the past.

In partnership with independent agency SDWM as well as a large pool of generous contributors, the project was launched online with an interactive microsite that lets any and all lend their voice by recording themselves singing the chorus. The end track will mix together the nation-wide choir and be presented on the steps of Parliament in early September in support of a fair referendum to establish a First Nations Voice. In just 4 days since launch, over 5,000 people have added their voice.

The project puts the voices of Indigenous youth, too often unheard or ignored, at the forefront and celebrates what can be achieved when we come together as a collective voice.

Fourteen-year-old Ci’Ellah Anu is just one of 23 Indigenous girls who are paving the way to change through music.

“As an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young person, it is heartwarming to know that a growing number of Australians already recognise our sovereignty,” Ci’Ellah says of Dream Baby Dream’s impact so far.

Says Felix Riebl, co-founder and band leader of internationally acclaimed band The Cat Empire: “We are so happy to have the incredible and important voices of the Marliya Choir as part of Spinifex Gum. These young women are not just the future of their communities but also of our country. We want to use this opportunity – this musical call to action – to unite Australians in this cause and reshape the kind of future they and other First Nations People will have. We truly hope this project will result in greater inclusion and a voice for First Nations People in our Constitution. That’s our dream, and this is just the beginning.”

Says Jake Turnbull, founder and creative lead, SDWM Design: “We’d like to thank the many partners who have generously donated their time and expertise to make this musical first vocal collaboration a reality. Now, we hope to gather the support of as many voices as possible both online and in person to make the dream a reality too.”

With an aim of inspiring Australians to speak the truth about our country’s history and to demand change and a better future for all, the young musicians of Spinifex Gum have taken the Dream Baby Dream project on a national tour culminating in Canberra.
