Crater director Ed de Carvalho delivers an ode to Olympic rowers in ‘Silent Without the Sun’

Short film ‘Silent Without The Sun’ directed by Ed de Carvalho and written by Tom Sacre, showcases what happens when there is a break in the Olympic cycle as he follows the Australian Rowing Team during a tumultuous 2020. The powerful story is illustrated like never before – a beautiful and courageous visual experience that champions the athletes that get up before the sun and rise to the occasion.

Says de Carvalho: “Having previously rowed on the Australian National Rowing Team, I often think about my mates who still get up every day to achieve their dreams of going to an Olympics. I saw last year as an opportunity tell a story that wasn’t in focus to the wider public – athletes striving to make it to Tokyo but not knowing if it was going ahead. I was very lucky to have a talented team like DP Casimir Dickson on set and Jonny Higgins composing an epic track.”

de Carvalho was able to create a compelling piece for a sport which doesn’t usually have the visual boundaries pushed very often.

Says Steven Farrer, executive producer at Crater: “This film shows the breadth of the work Ed can execute from socially brand-lead films through to short form storytelling. He knows how to build excitement and we’ve seen Ed continually step up to the plate for our clients.”

Silent Without The Sun is currently doing the short film festival circuit and has picked up a handful of selections and awards. The Australian Olympic Committee, Rowing Australia, Henley Rowing Regatta, Row2K in the US and World Rowing are all pushing the film. Channel 7 also broadcasted the film on prime-time news as part of a feature story on the Olympics and challenges Tokyo posed, with the soon-to-be released feature story from the International Olympic Committee.
